Bayern Munich have gone off to their best-ever start to a season this term. The Bavarian giants have won all of their 13 matches in all competitions so far.

Not only that, but Bayern youngster Lennart Karl has made an electric start to his professional career there, which has caused quite a stir in the German footballing world of late.

Who Is Bayern youngster Lennart Karl?

Bayern youngster Lennart Karl was born on February 22, 2008, in the town of Frammersbach. He arrived at the Bayern academy in 2022, at age 14, from the youth team of amateur side SV Viktoria Aschaffenburg. He has joined the first team of the Bavarians ahead of this season, in the summer’s Club World Cup.

He made his first competitive team debut in the opening 10-0 victory in the tournament for the Bavarians against the part-timers from New Zealand, Auckland City FC.

Eye-Catching Start for Bayern’s First Team

After the tournament in the United States, Karl remained in the Bayern Munich first-team squad, in no small part due to the lack of depth the team have, particularly in the offensive positions.

However, the 17-year-old right winger has so far made the best of the situation, having appeared 10 times in the side’s 13 matches so far this season.

He became Bayern Munich’s youngest Champions League goalscorer after giving them the lead on Matchday 3 of the UCL against Belgian side Club Brugge, five minutes into the game.

In the most recent match in the Bundesliga, just days after his Champions League debut start and goal, Bayern youngster Lennart Karl made headlines again, with his first domestic league strike.

This time, to make it 3-0 against Borussia Mönchengladbach, shortly after being substituted into the game.

“Karl-Mania” and the Dangers of the Hype

The German media have been filled with over-the-top praise for Bayern youngster Lennart Karl, including calls for him to be part of the Germany squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup (for which Julian Nagelsmann’s men still have to qualify).

For that reason, a strong dose of reality is in order. First of all, the young man is 17 years old and is far from securing a regular starting spot in Bayern’s first team, given that Michael Olise is still coach Vincent Kompany’s preferred choice to start on the right wing.

Furthermore, Karl has mustered only two goals and one assist in his time with the Bayern first team so far. Yes, those goals were both stunning, and they both came in the two most recent matches back-to-back, but that does not make him the saviour of German football, at least not yet.

Karl needs to grow, both as a person and a player. That much hype this early on in his career can only be detrimental to this process.

As soon as he has one or two bad games, which is inevitable at this age, the same media that have praised him to the high heavens will also bash him mercilessly.

Final Thoughts

None of this is to say that the current development of Bayern youngster Lennart Karl has not been spectacular; it clearly has. However, the hype is too much.

Kompany and the club officials have responded calmly and with caution to his rise. That is the only sensible thing to do with such a young player.
