The UEFA Champions League is one of the most coveted football tournaments in the world. Home to countless unexpected finishes and hearts broken. These are some of the greatest final matches.
Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernández, and Andrés Iniesta led Barça using their tiki-taka style of play. While Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, and Javier Hernández led Man U by stretching the field.
Barça got their first taste of victory in the 27th minute. Xavi took the ball up the middle, slipped it in past Ferdinand, finding Pedro Ledesma who made it 1-0.
Fortunately for Man U, Rooney was able to find the back of the net in the 34th minute to level the score and carry them into the half.
In the 54th minute, Messi stuns the crowd with a shot from over 25 yards out. Followed by David Villa scoring in the 69th to win the match.
Trying for another upset was Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, and Karim Benzema for Real and hoping to shake their previous finals loss was Antoine Greizmann, Fernando Torres, and Diego Godin for Atlético.
Sergio Ramos was first to strike in the 15th minute, forcing the ball past Oblak from Toni Kross’ free kick.
After Greizmann missed his penalty in the 48th minute, Yannick Carrasco managed to keep Atlético alive by scoring with 11 minutes left in regular time. Taking us into penalties.
The score was 4-3 when Juanfran took his shot, sadly his attempt glanced off the post. This allowed Ronaldo to step up and take the cup home for Real.
PSG kicked off the match with two goals in just 8 minutes being scored by Achraf Hakimi in the 12th and Désiré Doué in the 20th. Feeling the pressure even after the half, Inter made four substitutions in 10 minutes. Two of which were Yann Bisseck coming on in the 53rd and off in the 62nd.
This did little to quell PSG’s momentum as Doué scored his brace in the 63rd. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia would join the scoring parade in the 73rd. Capping off what is now the largest scoring final – with a 5-0 scoreline – and the club’s first UCL title was Senny Mayulu in the 86th minute.
After this week’s completion of the round of 16’s first leg, fans have already begun to speculate which of their favorite teams will make it to the finals to earn the right to be called UEFA Champions.
Real’s 3-0 win over Manchester City definitely puts them as a contender. The same can be said for PSG with their big 5-2 win over Chelsea FC.
Although there is a long road ahead before fans get their dream finals match. It all comes down to who can leave next week’s leg with their heads held high.
