Atletico Madrid forward Memphis Depay looks as if he will be on his way out of the club this summer, just 18 months after joining Los Colchoneros.

It was reported on Wednesday that Atletico and Memphis would part ways with the Dutchman as a free agent this summer, despite an automatic extension clause in his contract for another year. Manager Diego Simeone hinted that he was not content with Memphis during a press conference three weeks ago.

Now Cadena SER are reporting that the breaking point in their relationship came after their Champions League elimination. Simeone could not understand why Memphis would have been available for a potential semi-final of the Champions League, but his recovery period was then extended in order to ensure he was completely fit for the Euros this summer with the Netherlands.

El Cholo couldn’t abide Memphis prioritising the Netherlands over his club duties, when the two were not necessarily conflicting, and decided it was best to ship him out. The Dutchman was Simeone’s preferred partner for Antoine Griezmann at the start of the season, but a combination of fitness issues and his attitude will see him leave just a year later.
