Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike are quickly building a strong connection at Liverpool.

While it’s been a challenging season at Anfield, the emerging partnership between Wirtz and Ekitike has been one of the few bright spots.

Ekitike has drawn comparisons to a Brazilian icon from Arne Slot and Gary Lineker, while Rio Ferdinand is growing frustrated with some of what he’s seen from Wirtz in recent weeks.

The summer arrivals have already linked up for six goals this campaign. If they combine once more, they’ll break a record held by Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard.

Wirtz and Ekitike are off to a strong start, but Gary Neville still believes Liverpool can do more to maximise their potential.

Neville shared his thoughts on The Gary Neville Podcast: “Just get Wirtz close to Ekitike, get them close together. Get them near to each other, and you’ll be in business, you’ll score goals.”

“He’s got a real sort of what would be quality in tight areas, and he can find the pass, and he can manipulate the ball and understand where he is.

Neville went on to add: “He [Wirtz] knows where he is. So it’s a real unique quality to be able to do that.”

Arne Slot faces key Liverpool call he can’t get wrong

After their recent performances together, there can be no denying they have become Liverpool’s most important players.

Cody Gakpo could soon come back into the fold, and if that happens, it might mean one of them has to make way.

Milos Kerkez has looked more comfortable playing behind Wirtz, while his performances tend to dip when Gakpo is ahead of him.

We also saw Ekitike benched in favour of Gakpo against Bournemouth not long ago, and that decision didn’t exactly pay off.

Slot clearly trusts the former PSV forward, but sticking with him too often could disrupt the chemistry between Ekitike and Wirtz, which has been a rare bright spot for Liverpool lately.

The next match is against Manchester City. Both players need to be in the lineup if Liverpool are to have any chance of getting a result.
