Christian Eriksen’s agent surprised Wrexham chief executive Michael Williamson over the summer when he reached out to discuss a possible deal for the Championship club to sign the veteran midfielder.
Eriksen’s name didn’t appear in many transfer rumours, despite being available as a free agent, which led to some frustration among pundits back home in Denmark.
Thomas Gravesen, who played for Everton and Real Madrid, raised concerns about Eriksen while he was still without a club. “It is frightening how quiet it has been around Christian Eriksen since his contract expired,” Gravesen told {{GIVE_ME_SPORT}}. “I really thought there would be more interest.”
The chance to move came in September when Wolfsburg offered him a spot on their squad. So far, Eriksen has made seven appearances for Wolfsburg, who are currently 12th in the Bundesliga table.
Michael Williamson has outlined why Christian Eriksen turned down Wrexham’s offer over the summer.
The Welsh side had made a move for him but nothing came of it, even though the club was riding a wave of popularity from their climb up the English football pyramid and the success of their Disney+ documentary series.
Eriksen decided against joining because he didn’t want to be involved in another documentary project, something Williamson explained during an appearance on That Wrexham Podcast.
He said: “I reached out to the agent [Martin Schoots]. And what was really interesting in the first call is the reaction was, ‘We don’t want his story to be in a documentary, because we’ve had plenty of opportunities for a documentary for his story’.
“He thought we were calling not because of his footballing capabilities, but because we wanted a documentary story (about Eriksen).
“I’m like, ‘Wait a minute. I didn’t even think about that’. Obviously I’m aware of it, but that wasn’t the reason we were calling. We were calling because he could potentially be an interesting footballer.
“We were looking for players that could play for us in the Championship, difference-makers that could help us be competitive on the pitch.
United have played Wrexham five times in the past, and the Red Devils have come out on top in every one of those matches.
The first meeting came back in 1957, an FA Cup fourth round tie that ended 5-0 to United. Liam Whelan and Tommy Taylor both scored twice, with Rodger Byrne also finding the net.
The most recent game between the two sides was also an FA Cup fourth round match. In 1995, United won 5-2 after coming from behind, with goals from Denis Irwin (two), Ryan Giggs, Brian McClair, and an own goal by Tony Humes.
