Chelsea have a talented squad that isn’t performing to their highest potential with Mauricio Pochettino’s side currently sitting in 11th place in the Premier League side. Amid this, there has been an interesting update on the future of Marc Cucurella.

Chelsea Could Sell Marc Cucurella And Another Defender

Chelsea Will Assess Cucurella’s Situation

Fabrizio Romano has weighed in on the Spanish defender’s links to a possible return to La Liga, where he had his breakthrough with Real Sociedad. He states that Cucurella’s situation will be assessed by the Blues at the end of the season, with the left-back currently looking to return to action after being troubled by injuries in recent months.

The journalist also names defender Trevoh Chalobah among the players whose future will be assessed, indicating that they could be sold if not found suited to the club’s long-term plans. He adds that “these players are waiting” to see what Chelsea decide when it comes to their long-term plans, their tactical plans and the situation of manager Pochettino as well.

Romano, writing on his CaughtOffside column, adds: “Cucurella was available on loan in the final days of August last year but deal with Man United collapsed because Man Utd wanted to include a break clause for January and Chelsea rejected.”

Could Anybody Else Leave Chelsea In Summer Window?

Chelsea are yet to extend the contract of veteran defender Thiago Silva, whose deal expires at the end of June and it currently looks like he is on his way out of the club. There is also uncertainty over the future of Conor Gallagher, who was strongly linked to a move to Tottenham Hotspur in the winter transfer window and is unable to agree on a new contract either.

Cucurella, who joined Chelsea in 2022 for a rumoured fee of over £60 million, has not been able to cement a regular starting spot at the London club. He was praised as “fantastic” last season, and made 12 appearances earlier in this campaign, even playing as a right-back. However, it seems that the 25-year-old will have to produce some really impressive performances after returning from injury to secure his long-term future at Stamford Bridge.
