It is clear for all to see that Tottenham need to bring in a new left-winger in the summer. The Lilywhites struggled to create chances from the left-flank last season, and one of the main reasons for that was the lack of impact from club captain Heung-Min Son. The South Korea international failed to step up when it mattered the most and also missed the latter stages of the campaign due to injury.
Now, the 32-year-old is heading towards a potential exit in the summer as he bows out on a stellar 10-year stay at N17. It was reported earlier that Saudi clubs are keen to land Son for next season, and are willing to pay a hefty price for his services. His competition for the left-wing position failed to make an impact as well last season.
The North London club signed Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich in January. And the 20-year-old found life tough during the first few months in the Premier League. But the Frenchman showed glimpses of his true potential during the latter stages of the campaign. This earned him a permanent deal at N17, and Thomas Frank is also eager to work with the talented forward next season.
Tottenham are looking to add more depth in the attack as they look to build on the Europa League success next season. It was reported earlier that Spurs were interested in signing Man City star Jack Grealish in the summer. The England international has not lived up to his expectations at the Etihad Stadium, and wants to move to pastures new quickly. The aforementioned report also suggested that the Cityzens have put up a price tag of £50m for his services.
Now, ex-Spurs player Chris Waddle has urged the club to not sign the 29-year-old in the summer. Speaking to OLBG.com, Waddle said,
“I don’t think Tottenham need Jack Grealish, I’ll be perfectly honest. I think Jack’s a good player, I’m not saying he’s not, but he’s not a left winger, I think he’s a number 10. Tottenham have got a lot of numerous players who they’ve been linked with or looking at. Now, if you’re going to bring Jack Grealish in you need to play him as an attacking midfield player, a number 10.”
The Spurs icon added,
“I’ve watched him for years. I think that’s where he’s at his best, where he can float around. I don’t think he’s a winger. He’s not tricky. He’s not pacey. He can’t really beat men. He’s an intelligent footballer and he’s got a good range of passing so I’d like to see him play as a number 10. If Tottenham were looking to bring him in as a number 10, then you could see him thriving. But if they’re looking to bring him in to replace Heung-Min Son on the left wing, not for me, no.”
Chris Waddle suggested that Tottenham should not buy Jack Grealish as he is not a left-winger. The Spurs icon added that the England international thrives as a number 10, where can float around the striker. Waddle then pointed out that Grealish does not have the required attributes to be a left-winger and his game is more suited to the number 10 position. The ex-pro turned pundit later said that Spurs should only consider signing him as an attacking midfielder, as he will not be able to replace Heung-Min Son on the wing.
Signing Jack Grealish would be a backward step for Tottenham, as the England international is heading towards a steady decline. The 29-year-old has also lost all his confidence and the Lilywhites cannot afford to sign a player that may or may not deliver next season. It looks like Daniel Levy might shift his focus on other options. It was reported earlier that the Spurs chairman is keen to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace for next season.
