Tottenham Hotspur have won the Europa League against all odds. The Lilywhites exceeded all expectations and went on to end a 17-year long wait for a major trophy in dramatic fashion. This season has been a disaster for the North London club in domestic competitions, but it is fair to say that Ange Postecoglou’s men have made amends by winning a European trophy at the end of the campaign.
Spurs are now guaranteed a place in the Champions league next season. With the club sitting 17th in the Premier League with 21 losses to their name, it is truly an astonishing achievement to make sure that the season could be called a success. But fans know that a major squad overhaul is still needed in the summer.
It is important to note that winning the Europa League might just paper over the cracks for some time. And Tottenham cannot enter the market being complacent as the North London club needs to bring in reinforcements in the upcoming transfer window. Let’s not forget that the Lilywhites have endured a dismal domestic campaign. So investing in the summer might just be a great way to kickstart a new era at N17.
Many key players have underperformed for Tottenham this season. Despite the Europa League success, it is fair to say that several players will head for the exit doors after enduring an embarrassing Premier League campaign. There should be no justification as to why the Lilywhites are just a place above the relegation zone during the business end of the season.
Now, Gabby Agbonlahor has also urged Tottenham to invest in the summer. Speaking on talkSPORT, Agbonlahor said,
“Spurs have to go now. They have to invest. They have to get rid of the players that aren’t good enough. They have to go through it now.”
The ex-Villa player added,
“Can they go next year like Newcastle, Crystal Palace, winning trophies? Can they go again next season and win another trophy, an FA Cup, a Carabao Cup? Can these players get used to winning trophies? Can they go out and get a Champions League squad assembled for next season and have a good go? Why not? You’re in it now. This season’s forgotten.”
Gabby Agbonlahor was quick to insist that Daniel Levy needs to invest in the summer and get rid of players that have underperformed at the club. The ex-Villa star also questioned Spurs’ ambition to improve next season just like Newcastle United and Crystal Palace have done. Agbonlahor suggested that the Lilywhites will need players that will be hungry for more titles and give a good go in all the competitions the club is involved in.
This will start with Daniel Levy making the right decisions regarding the future of the club. The Spurs chairman must first address the managerial situation at N17. Ange Postecoglou’s fate is still hanging by a thread and Levy must make sure that the right decision is taken regarding the Australian’s job.
