Tottenham Hotspur take on Brentford on New Year’s Eve in the Premier League, as Thomas Frank hopes for a happy return to the Gtech Community Stadium.
Thomas Frank spent more than six years at Brentford, guiding the club to promotion and making them a stable outfit in the Premier League in recent seasons. However, the Dane will be eyeing a league double over his former employers, having masterminded Tottenham to a 2-0 home success at the start of December.
Spurs ended their two-game losing run in the league on Sunday by scraping past Crystal Palace 1-0 at Selhurst Park. By doing so, they will head to west London with some much-needed confidence on Thursday.
Tottenham will be boosted by Cristian Romero’s availability after their skipper served his one-game suspension against Palace. Xavi Simons still has two games to serve as suspension, while Lucas Bergvall is expected to be fit to face the Bees, as Frank had mixed news for the youngster.
There has also been talk of when Destiny Udogie will be back for Spurs. The left-back suffered a soft tissue injury in the 2-2 draw with Newcastle United at the start of December, and as a result, he has subsequently missed the last four games.
The Italy international had been ruled out until January with a hamstring injury, but ahead of the Brentford game, Frank provided a positive update on his fitness.
“He [Udogie] is running out there on the pitch. Doing individual sessions. He’s progressing,” Frank said in his pre-match press conference (h/t Football London).
This fitness update on Destiny Udogie delivered by Frank should be received positively by the Tottenham fanbase. Udogie has endured another injury-ravaged season, missing eight games already. This lack of continuation due to injury problems has hampered his form and progress in a Tottenham shirt, preventing him from taking the next step in his evolution.
Frank, his coaching staff and the club’s medical department have to take extra care when it comes to the Italy international’s fitness. At 23, the rampaging left-back has a long way to go in his career, but constant injury setbacks will never allow him to unlock his true potential.
It is good to see Udogie back doing individual work in a bid to regain full fitness. The Verona-born talent is expected to miss the Brentford trip too, but there could be a chance of him being involved against Sunderland at home on January 4.
