Tottenham boss Thomas Frank gives an update on the contract situation of Rodrigo Bentancur

Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed a strong start to the new season under the leadership of Thomas Frank. Although they had a blip against Bournemouth in their third Premier League fixture before the international break, the north Londoners responded very well with a 3-0 win over London rivals West Ham United on Saturday.

Thomas Frank’s side were excellent against West Ham in almost every department. It also marked their third clean sheet in four games, demonstrating the defensive resoluteness. Spurs’ midfield unit have looked composed in and out of possession across the majority of four games, unlike the 2024-25 season, where it was overrun and outsmarted time and again.

Ever since Frank’s appointment as the new Tottenham head coach, Rodrigo Bentancur has enjoyed a new lease of life. The 28-year-old has not only been a tempo-setter in possession but also shown his energy and work rate without it, establishing himself as one of the first names on the Dane’s teamsheet.

Thomas Frank coy on the Uruguay international’s future

It is not a secret that Rodrigo Bentancur has entered the final 12 months of his contract at N17. The north London club will have to be wary of his contract situation, as the Uruguay international will be eligible to strike a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January 1.

Before the London derby against West Ham, Frank was asked to give a contract update on Bentancur. The 51-year-old said he is happy with the central midfielder and called him a “top professional”. However, he chose to remain coy on the player’s future.

“I think first and foremost, I’m very happy with Rodri. He’s been a very good player for us, a top professional in every aspect. I’m happy with him, he’s happy with being here. I know that for a fact. Let’s see what’s going to happen in the future,” Frank told Football London.

Tottenham planning to accelerate contract talks with Bentancur

As per recent reports, Spurs are planning to accelerate contract talks with Bentancur. The club’s new CEO Vinai Venkatesham is currently working on the midfielder’s new deal, with Frank having made it clear that the 28-year-old is a crucial component of his plans moving forward. Spurs are apparently doing their best to tie him down to a new deal and secure his future, amid interest from Atletico Madrid.

Atletico Madrid are eyeing a potential free transfer for the South American star next summer, as they are not willing to pay a fee to Tottenham. The Hotspur Way bosses certainly do not want to see a quality and experienced player like Bentancur walk out on a free transfer and have started taking necessary steps to persuade him to commit his future at the club.

The fans will hope Bentancur stays injury free, delivers consistent displays, and pens a new deal as quickly as possible.
