Tottenham managed to round off 2025 on a positive note after securing all three points against Crystal Palace earlier this week. However, the Lilywhites were unable to carry that momentum into the New Year, as they were held to a goalless draw by Brentford at the Gtech Stadium on New Year’s Day. It proved to be a night of mixed emotions for Thomas Frank, who returned to familiar territory for the first time since swapping West London for N17 last summer.
The North Londoners delivered a flat performance and showed little urgency in their search for a breakthrough against the Bees. They struggled badly in the final third, with the absence of a creative presence in midfield becoming increasingly apparent. It was a closely contested encounter that ultimately finished level, with Brentford maintaining their impressive home form in the Premier League.
Archie Gray went closest to finding the net for Spurs, but his goal-bound header was brilliantly cleared off the line by Nathan Collins. That chance stood out as the defining moment of the evening for the Lilywhites, who failed to find any rhythm in attack. It appeared that Thomas Frank was more focused on ensuring his side did not concede rather than pushing for a winner, a cautious approach that prompted boos from sections of the away support at the final whistle.
Tottenham, however, continued to show promise defensively after registering back-to-back clean sheets in the Premier League this week. The Lilywhites kept things tight in consecutive London derbies, taking their overall clean sheet tally to eleven across all competitions this season. Supporters would have taken encouragement from their side’s newfound defensive solidity, even as attacking concerns persist under Thomas Frank.
The Danish tactician was quick to underline his team’s defensive strength following the stalemate against Brentford. Speaking in his post-match press conference (Tottenham Hotspur), Frank said, highlight the ‘one positive’ from the game:
“I think the positive is that we’re going here against a very good home team that you need to respect with the results they’ve done where they’re beating Liverpool, United, Newcastle, Villa, drawing with Chelsea and keeping them on that low amount of chances. They had seven shots in total.”
The Spurs boss added,
“I think that’s a very, very strong defensive performance. I think the back four did excellent, the whole team did excellent, especially Micky and Romero did very well with Thiago and Kevin Schade up there. So that’s a positive.”
Frank went on to highlight Brentford’s formidable home record in the Premier League this season, while insisting that his Tottenham side did well to limit the hosts’ chances. He praised the Lilywhites’ defensive resilience, singling out Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero for their outstanding work in keeping Igor Thiago and Kevin Schade quiet throughout the contest.
Despite boasting an impressive away record in the Premier League, Spurs find themselves languishing in the bottom half of the table at the midway point of the campaign. The Lilywhites sit 12th and have shown little indication of closing the gap on their rivals as they push for European qualification next summer. Patience among the fanbase is already wearing thin, and it appears the task at N17 may be proving too demanding for Thomas Frank.
