Thomas Frank is facing immense scrutiny for his Tottenham side’s poor performances in the PL.

The loud boos echoing around the Gtech Stadium from the travelling Tottenham supporters were clear evidence that Thomas Frank is struggling to steady the ship at N17. The Lilywhites were held to a goalless draw by a Brentford side that looked there for the taking for most of the match. More than the result itself, it was the level of performance that alarmed fans, who vented their frustration at the Danish tactician.

Discontent among the supporters has been a recurring theme for the North Londoners this season. Fans have been unhappy with both the results and the performances, which have left Spurs hovering in the bottom half of the league table after 19 matches. There have been no real signs of progress from last season, when the club finished just one place above the relegation zone.

Many fans believed last season’s Europa League success would provide a strong platform to build on under Thomas Frank. However, that has not been the case, with Spurs failing to showcase their true potential despite spending a staggering £180m on eight new signings in the summer. The Lilywhites have struggled to hit the ground running and have been unable to find consistency in the Premier League.

Thomas Frank understands Tottenham fans’ frustration this season

Tottenham supporters had high expectations of Thomas Frank when he was appointed as the club’s new manager following the Europa League triumph. It is fair to say, though, that the former Brentford boss has found it difficult to get the best out of his squad, with Spurs sitting 12th in the league on just 26 points from 19 matches.

Thomas Frank has urged fans to remain patient, insisting that his side are going through a transitional phase after a difficult start to the Premier League campaign. Speaking in his pre-match press conference (via Tottenham Hotspur), Frank said, making a honest admission:

“Yeah, I think the expectation is good. I also think we are probably in a bit of a transition. Not that we don’t want to play a lot better, but the club, the squad, the injuries, all that, taking into consideration is part of that. In a transition period not everything is perfect and you don’t get the win or we don’t play as good as we want or I want.”

The Spurs boss added:

“I’m very aware that Palace, I’m happy with that because it’s very important to have the ability to do that, but also very aware that we didn’t play as good as I want in that aspect, but also I acknowledge where we are, so it’s just that understanding of that and that’s fair that I understand it a little bit better and the fans want more.”

Tottenham fans had high expectations when the highly rated manager was appointed as Spurs boss in the summer. After a difficult start to the season, however, Frank has reiterated that the Lilywhites are in a period of transition as they deal with an injury crisis and several players being out of form. He believes the result against Crystal Palace was encouraging, even if the performance did not meet expectations, adding that the North Londoners will need time to return to their best.

The pressure is now on Thomas Frank to improve performances and start delivering positive results in the Premier League. Spurs face a stern test next as they welcome a high-flying Sunderland side on Sunday. It is a must-win fixture for the Lilywhites as they look to begin the new year with a home victory in the league.
