This is the third season in a row where Tottenham Hotspur have been hit with a major injury crisis midway through the season. Thomas Frank had just 11 senior players fit for last weekend’s game against Manchester City, with skipper Cristian Romero forced to play through illness in the first half.
Despite currently having a staggering 12 first-team players out injured, fans were perplexed as to why the squad wasn’t reinforced beyond two additions in the winter transfer window. Spurs managed to secure the signing of Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid, and young left-back Souza followed him soon through the door.
Before the Manchester City fixture, defenders Djed Spence and Kevin Danso dropped out of the squad due to injuries. Djed Spence missed the game due to a calf problem, while a toe problem kept Kevin Danso out of action.
Danso missed the 2-2 draw with Man City after snapping the ligament in his big toe in our 2-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League last week. He will not be available for Tottenham’s trip to Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, but Thomas Frank is hopeful the central defender will not be sidelined for the long-term.
“(The injury was) really unlucky. I think every time he has been called upon this season, he has just delivered. It is fantastic to work with him in every aspect. We will know a little bit more this week in terms of how long he will be out. Hopefully, it will not be too long,” Frank said in his press conference.
Danso has made 23 appearances for the north London outfit so far this season, with most of those coming from the bench. The Austrian international has deputised well for either Romero or Van de Ven when called upon, repaying the gaffer’s faith. A robust, tough-tackling and no-nonsense presence, the 27-year-old provides his team with a different attacking dimension with his laser-guided long throws.
The defender’s injury at such a critical juncture of the season is a big blow for Frank’s side. Hopefully, Danso is back fit later this month. In his absence, Radu Dragusin and Joao Palhinha will emerge as backup alternatives in central defence for Tottenham.
