It has been more than month since Tottenham Hotspur ended its trophy-drought, and Daniel Levy has still not managed to bring in new players for next season.
The Spurs chairman has done nothing to back his bold statement about aiming to win the Premier League and the Champions League in the coming years. While many clubs have already concluded most of their business in the early parts of the transfer window, the Lilywhites are still struck on gear one and yet to get going in the market. Apart from confirming permanent captures of Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel, there have been no movement as far as the incomings are concerned.
Tottenham have several areas to address before the new season commences, with the midfield certainly one of them. Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur have entered the final year of their contracts, and while the former ended the last season strongly with some eye-catching displays, the Hotspur Way chiefs are planning to offload him this summer.
If Bissouma departs, Spurs would need a strong and athletic central midfielder to replace him in the roster. In addition, a creative midfielder would do well, particularly with James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski unlikely to be fit for the start of the season with long-term knee injuries. One player who has been on the North London outfit’s radar for a while now is Jacob Ramsey.
Since breaking into the senior Aston Villa team some five years ago, Jacob Ramsey has performed well in the Premier League. The last season wasn’t a great one for him, though, as the 24-year-old failed to cement his spot in the starting XI under Unai Emery. It was reported in May that the Englishman is unhappy at Villa Park and would be open to a move for more regular starts.
Villa must offload some players in the coming weeks to stay below the PSR threshold, and selling Ramsey would help the club in raising pure profit for next year due to his ‘homegrown’ status. Now, ex-Villa and Manchester United scout Mick Brown has delivered an update on Tottenham’s interest in the player. He claims the new Spurs boss “rates” Ramsey and would like to bring him to N17.
“Tottenham have been looking at Jacob Ramsey,” Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider.
“Thomas Frank rates him and he’s one Spurs have been interested in for a while. They’ve had scouts keeping an eye on his performances, and they’ve now spoken to his agent about what it would take to bring him in.
“He’s had doubts about whether he’s going to be a regular starting XI player at Villa, or if he’s going to be better served moving somewhere else. So, a move to Tottenham would be a fresh start and a new environment for him.
“Plus, from a Villa point of view, they might be open to letting him go to raise money. They’ve had these financial concerns and making profit from selling him will allow them to spend.”
Ramsey will fit perfectly into Thomas Frank’s system at White Hart Lane. With his close control, ball progression and creativity, he would instantly replace the ageing Son Heung-min on the left flank and provide a different dimension to Tottenham’s attack. His presence would complement Maddison nicely in the final third too.
A Premier League-proven commodity now, Spurs must now accelerate their pursuit of the Villa star.
