Thomas Tuchel has only been in the England job a few months, but reports suggest he is already growing weary of it. Pundits link him to a potential Premier League comeback, with Manchester United mentioned as a prime spot where Ruben Amorim faces real heat.
Tuchel signed an 18 month contract with the FA back in January. It runs until the 2026 World Cup finals. He chose the Three Lions role over a chance at Old Trafford last year. Now, former Chelsea man Scott Minto says the international schedule does not suit his style at all.
Tommy Tuchel bases himself in Germany for most England camps. This setup means he skips more than half of Premier League matchdays. He follows games on TV from afar. Clubs grumble that it keeps him out of touch with how players perform week in, week out. After a flat 1-0 win over Andorra in a recent friendly, Tuchel did not mince words and pushed for higher rhythm and intensity from his playersl.
Speaking on his situation, here is what Minto said on talkSPORT:
“I personally think (Ruben) Amorim will last until the end of the season, and I personally think Thomas Tuchel will take over – we’ll see what happens and whether that’s the case or not,”
“From what I’m hearing, Tuchel is not really particularly enjoying the England job. We’ll have to wait and see how the World Cup goes… If he wins it.”
“Of course he sounds excited about it in interviews, he knows how to play the game.”
Club football pulls Tuchel back hard. He lifted the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021. Then came a rough exit due to clashes with the board. BBC pundit Stephen Warnock also recently spoke about how he pictures Tuchel at United should Amorim depart.
Amorim has managed just ten league wins from 34 matches since joining in November. Supporters stir with unrest. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has pledged three years to him publicly. Yet some board voices call for change after dropped points in easy fixtures. Paul Scholes floats other boss ideas. Roy Keane dreams of Diego Simeone to bring fresh fire. Everyone has their set of ideas, but Tuchel seems like the best bet.
His pressing could click with United’s underfiring group. But he would step into the same owner spotlight that tests Amorim daily. The former Chelsea man has aired frustrations too. He is not among those who hides emotions. He spoke about the lack of energy during the 3-0 win against Wales very recently.
The run of games post the international break might seal Amorim’s short term fate. Stutters here could make Tuchel’s name echo louder in front of those who hold the decision making authority. For England, the road rolls on. But make no mistake, Tommy T would continue to note developments at Carrington.
