Following transfers both this summer and last summer, various Premier League players struggled to make an impression with their respective teams’ last season.
Some of these players, therefore, have to make an impression this season to revive their respective careers, but who are they?
In the form of Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo this summer, Brentford are losing assets that are pivotal to their goalscoring and creativity.
Last summer, the Bees spent 23.4 million euros on young midfielder Fabio Carvalho to contribute in that manner. However, so far, he has failed to impress.
Carvalho’s youth journey saw him transition through Fulham’s academy, quickly impressing various figures within the Fulham hierarchy.
Such quality ensured that manager Marco Silva entrusted him with the attacking midfield position throughout their most recent Championship promotion campaign, earning him a move to Liverpool.
Since then, the Portuguese youngster has undertaken various loans at Hull and RB Leipzig, earning him a permanent move to Brentford. However, this season, the youngster has only started three matches, scoring two and assisting one goal.
Danish manager Thomas Frank appears to have utilised midfielder Henrik Damsgaard in Carvalho’s role prominently, and the young midfielder should be looking to change that this season and show his quality.
Such is the nature of the Chelsea transfer merry-go-round, many players who possess quality have been left in the shadows, looking to move away to revitalise their careers.
One of these players is Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who has recently joined Everton in a €28.7 million deal.
The English midfielder is best known for his time with Leicester, where he spent the bulk of his youth career, alongside loans to both Blackpool and Luton Town, impressing in both.
The player earned his move to Chelsea after the 2023/24 season with Leicester in the EFL Championship, hitting double digits for both goals and assists.
In his most recent season with Chelsea, however, Dewsbury-Hall succumbed to a similar fate to Fabio Carvalho, only starting two Premier League matches.
The Englishman was able to score four and assist two in the Conference League for the Blues, though, indicating that his quality is still there.
By joining Everton, the midfielder should possess the creativity that David Moyes’ side has lacked, and start more frequently. This is an opportunity he should seize to show his creative qualities and propel himself to be in contention for the England squad.
Another player who should have the quality to challenge for the England squad, however, hasn’t recently, is Fulham midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe.
Although the player has been more effective than both Dewsbury-Hall and Fabio Carvalho, Fulham fans have been left wanting the player to take more risks and make more of an impression on the games he partakes in.
Throughout his time with Hale End and the Arsenal academy, Smith-Rowe’s quality was highly appreciated, in a similar manner to the loan spells the Englishman undertook with RB Leipzig and Huddersfield Town.
Injuries have curtailed the player’s career, however, ensuring that he didn’t feature for Arsenal as regularly as he would have liked before he joined Fulham.
Smith-Rowe was able to score six goals and assist three in his maiden season with the Whites. However, some fans have suggested that he lacked a presence in some games.
For many players, after returning from long-term injury setbacks, there is an initial apprehension to take risks due to the volatility of the injury.
However, now that Smith-Rowe has returned to a season of regular gametime, many Fulham fans will be hoping that the player takes more risks and increases his contributions as a result, showing more of the quality he possessed at Hale End in this coming season.
Many players will be looking to make an impression for their teams ahead of the upcoming campaign.
However, for various players, that impression is of heightened importance to them for various reasons.
Many fans will be intrigued to see how these players get on for their sides as the campaign gets underway.
The Premier League returns on Friday, August 15. Will either of the three make an impression as early as Matchday 1?
