Tottenham finally ended their long-standing trophy drought last season

Tottenham defied all expectations last season by winning the Europa League and ending their 17-year wait for a major trophy. The Lilywhites went on an impressive run in Europe, eventually defeating Manchester United in the final to secure their first European title in 41 years. The achievement ensured Ange Postecoglou’s name would be remembered in the club’s history, as he became only the third manager to guide Tottenham to European silverware.

Credit must be given where it is due, as the Australian tactician stayed true to his promise by delivering a major trophy in his second season at the club. Tottenham shifted their focus toward the Europa League midway through the season, placing their priority on European success. The gamble paid off, but it also drew criticism from some supporters and sections of the media who felt the team had neglected domestic competitions.

Despite the Europa League triumph, Postecoglou was dismissed due to Tottenham’s struggles in the Premier League. The Lilywhites finished the domestic campaign just one place above the relegation zone, losing 22 matches. Performances were stagnating, and it became evident that the team was not progressing under his leadership.

Tottenham relieved Ange Postecoglou from his duties a few days after the UEL success

Tottenham ultimately decided to part ways with Postecoglou in the summer, concluding that results and performances were unlikely to improve, even with European success to his name. The Australian was eager to continue at N17 and lead the club into the new season, but Daniel Levy opted for a change immediately after the campaign ended.

Now, former Spurs defender Paul Miller has expressed his belief that the club made the correct decision. Speaking to Sportsbloom, Miller said,

“Ange was an excellent coach. He had a clear attacking philosophy and brought us silverware, which we’ll always be grateful for. But I think the timing was right for a change.”

Miller acknowledged that Postecoglou did an excellent job at Tottenham, implementing attacking football and finally delivering silverware. However, he also noted that the team’s overall performances were not improving, and a managerial change was likely the right move at that stage.

Spurs fans will always appreciate Ange Postecoglou for giving them a moment of joy that will be remembered for years to come. The former manager never lacked confidence and always carried himself admirably. And who knows, perhaps Big Ange might have done just as well, or even better, than Thomas Frank had he remained at N17 this season.
