Tottenham chiefs face a big squad rebuilding job after a disastrous 2024/25 season

Tottenham Hotspur are gearing up for a significant summer overhaul following a forgettable campaign.

The Spurs bosses are expected to stick to their transfer strategy of signing young, prodigious talents who can be moulded into future superstars. And a qualification for next season’s Champions League—via winning the Europa League—would be hugely beneficial in helping Daniel Levy land the club’s targets this summer.

Ange Postecoglou and Co. still have it all to play for after their 1-1 Europa League quarter-final first leg draw with Eintracht Frankfurt. They head out to Germany next week following Thursday’s first leg, in which Pedro Porro’s excellent backheel cancelled out Hugo Ekitike’s opener.

The Athletic’s reputable journalist, David Ornstein, took part in his latest fan Q&A when the question was thrown his way over whether Tottenham could still attract top talent without qualifying for Europe. He believes Levy could still bring in high-profile players to White Hart Lane, interestingly mentioning the young talent the club have signed in the last few transfer windows.

“They’ve done a pretty good job of it so far! Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert and Antonin Kinsky… top signings who are impacting now and will be even better in the future,” David Ornstein replied to a Spurs fan’s question on his The Athletic column.

“That’s strong recruitment from Spurs in that area and there’s no reason why it won’t continue.”

The Lilywhites have been linked with several players over recent weeks and months. Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha and Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite are some of the names on the club’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window.

Tottenham’s policy of investing millions on highly-regarded talents are appreciated, but Levy must back it up with some experienced, Premier League-proven commodities. To reflect on Ornstein’s point, our club have a very good recruitment team with an active scouting network all across Europe, but we only managed to bring in the likes of Gray, Bergvall and Odobert whilst still competing in Europe.

Another player who has been the subject of interest is Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap. The England under-21 international has shown solid potential in his breakout Premier League season while spearheading the attack for a mediocre Ipswich side, netting 10 goals in 30 appearances thus far. Should the Tractor Boys get relegated—it looks like they will— Delap will be available for £30million this summer due to a relegation release clause in his contract.

Tottenham may manage to sign Delap without the entice of Europe, but to lure top talents like Cunha, Marc Guehi and many more, Champions League football will play a crucial role.
