Toronto FC fires head coach Chris Armas amid disappointing season

Toronto FC fired first-year head coach Chris Armas on Sunday, just one day after his team lost its sixth straight match with a 7-1 defeat at the hands of D.C. United.

Toronto is 1-2-8 on the season and is 0-6-1 since securing a 2-0 win over Columbus Crew SC on May 12. The club has allowed an MLS-worst 27 goals while scoring just 13 times.

Armas was hired in January after former head coach Greg Vanney joined the L.A. Galaxy following a seven-year tenure with Toronto FC. Last season under Vanney, Toronto went 13-5-5, securing the second seed in the Eastern Conference.

Armas previously served as head coach of the New York Red Bulls for more than two years before being fired last September. He went 29-21-11 with the Red Bulls, leading the club to a pair of playoff appearances in 2018 and 2019.

The 48-year-old entered coaching after a 12-year playing career in Major League Soccer. He appeared in 264 games for the Galaxy and Chicago Fire. On top of that, he also appeared in 66 matches for the U.S. men's national team.

It's unclear who Toronto might be targeting to take over for Armas.
