Tottenham are interested in signing Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini

Cristian Romero’s uncertain future at Tottenham Hotspur has dominated the back pages of rumour mill.

The Argentinean international has been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid in several months. The central defender has previously expressed his desire to play in Spain at some point in his career, while Diego Simeone has publicly praised the Tottenham star.

Spurs want to keep hold of Romero, despite the defender’s admission to play in Spain, but they are still scouring the market for his potential replacements. They will lose the defensive acumen if Romero departs this summer, and after the potential arrival of Japanese prospect Kota Takai, adding another commanding centre-back would not be the worst call this window.

Now, according to an exclusive report from CaughtOffside, Tottenham are among several clubs interested in signing Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini. Chelsea, Manchester United and Newcastle United are all keeping tabs on the player as well, while there are Serie A suitors in the form of Inter Milan, Napoli and Juventus.

Giorgio Scalvini is rated as one of the top young defensive talents in Europe. However, a glut of injuries over the course of the last two seasons have stagnated his development. The Italian suffered an ACL rupture in the 23/24 season. Soon after his recovery, he subsequently suffered a bad shoulder injury that once again required him to undergo operation.

But regardless of his injury issues, the 21-year-old has been attracting interest from various clubs in Italy and England. The aforementioned report adds Atalanta are open to Scalvini’s sale this summer. La Dea would let him go if they receive around €60m.

Scalvini is an exciting defensive prospect with huge ceiling, and there are no second thoughts about it. He’d also improve Tottenham’s options in defence ahead of their return to Champions League football. However, the biggest red flag is the Italian’s injury record in the last two seasons, which has seen him miss 58 games in total. He has constantly struggled with thigh, hamstring, adductor and muscle problems in recent years, thereby, stalling his progress in Bergamo.

Tottenham had their worst Premier League campaign this past year, with an injury crisis being one of its major factors. So, the last thing a new boss would want is to bring in a player who has battled with injury problems recently. And given Scalvini’s recent injury record, it would make utmost sense for the North Londoners to keep their interest. Also, the price tag of €60m is steep for someone who is still inexperienced and unproven at the highest level.

Rather, Thomas Frank should decide to use the incoming Takai in the first team next season. If needed, the Dane must also not hesitate to give either one of Ashley Phillips or Luka Vuskovic first-team opportunities after their impressive loan spells with Stoke City and KVC Westerlo, respectively.
