It has been a rollercoaster of a season for Tottenham Hotspur and our fans.
The Lilywhites have mightily underperformed in the Premier League, and despite an injury crisis hitting the squad, there are no excuses to lie just a spot above the three relegated sides. While a finish as high as 14th is still possible if they secure three points in their final game against Brighton and Hove Albion and other results go their way, it’s unlikely to polish over a disastrous campaign
In contrast to their league form, Ange Postecoglou and Co. have done very well in the UEFA Europa League and are set to lock horns with Premier League rivals Manchester United in the final in Bilbao on May 21. Spurs could salvage something if they do end up winning the Europa League trophy.
With that will come the Champions League qualification for next term, pouring extra revenue into the club’s finances as a result. This would boost Tottenham’s summer transfer budget, giving them hope of luring top talents across Europe.
Former Tottenham and Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham claims the winner of the Europa League final will hold a substantial advantage in the transfer market because of the prestige of competing in the elite Champions League.
“The attraction of playing in the Champions League has got to be seductive for any player wanting to enhance his career. So whichever club wins the Europa League will have a massive advantage in terms of the transfer market,” Teddy Sheringham exclusively told Tottenham News.
This summer is shaping up to be a pivotal one for Spurs as they look to rebuild the squad after a forgettable campaign. Ange Postecoglou is understandably under intense pressure, and it will be interesting to see whether winning the Europa League would increase his chances of staying at the club for the third season.
Qualifying for the Champions League may not only give Ange a chance to continue his project at N17 but also change the scenario of the club. The financial boost that comes with competing in the Europe’s elite competition is massive, and it could also be vital to attracting some of the world’s best talents. Moreover, it would give Daniel Levy a chance to hold onto some of the club’s best players , such as Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur.
The stakes are massive, and after the season the Lilywhites have endured, it is the responsibility and duty of Ange and Co. to give joy to our loyal fans by ending the trophy drought in Bilbao.
