Tottenham Hotspur expected to hand Son Heung-min a new deal this summer

Pre-season has already commenced, and Heung-min Son’s future at Tottenham Hotspur is still quite blurry at the moment given all the links linking the South Korean away from Hotspur Way this summer. There are also suggestions that the North Londoners could reconsider having the talks about his future after the Asia ‘leg of the ongoing preseason campaign, given that the Lilywhites could lose up to 75% of the revenue of the former Bayer Leverkusen star if he doesn’t take the field.

King backs Tottenham to offer a new deal to Son

The 33-year-old has only one year left on his current deal at Hotspur Way, and he has been attracting interest from Major League Soccer side LAFC, which comes after the previous links with a move to the Saudi Pro League. However, former club scout Bryan King has urged his former employers to keep their talismanic forward at N17 for at least one more season.

King, speaking exclusively with Tottenham News, insists that the Lilywhites will end up offering their skipper fresh terms, and that would be because of having Thomas Frank at the helm in North London, complemented by the influence that he still holds in that dressing room at Hotspur Way as well as among the supporters.

He said:

“After Harry Kane, the most popular player within the last few years at Spurs is Son.

“If I were Tottenham, I would keep him for this season and then offer him another year next summer. Because then, if he does go to another club, there’s got to be a fee involved because Spurs have made an offer.

“If I were Frank, I think I’d need all the help I could get in my first season, and having Son on my side could only help.

“As the club captain and probably the most popular player at the football club, I would want him to stay.”

Along the last season at N17, there was this visible sense of decreasing pace and power of the South Korean, and he still went on to score seven goals, complemented by a further tally of ten assists in the English top tier. But let’s be honest, given the high standards that he has set for himself, that is still an underwhelming season for him.

Son is a legend at Tottenham

He is an absolute icon around North London, given his 454 appearances donning the North Londoners badge since moving to N17 from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, and he has gone on to score 173 goals alongside a tally of 101 assists for Tottenham. And then comes that Europa League trophy, which definitely takes him to a status of being one of the club’s modern greats. And that is exactly why many supporters want to think that he deserves to see out the final year of his contract at Tottenham on his own terms.

But as of now, everything is still on the table. It could happen that, like King insists, Tottenham may end up giving him a new contract, or maybe Levy ends up cashing in on him very late in the transfer window. But given that there is an air of transition at N17 with Thomas Frank taking charge, letting go of Son is a big risk that feels not worth taking.
