Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has the chance of ending the club’s trophy drought this season

A lot has been said in the media regarding Tottenham’s potential chances of qualifying for Champions League football next season. The Lilywhites are sitting 16th in the Premier League table and are nowhere near the qualifying spots for Europe via the league. However, Ange Postecoglou’s men still stand a chance of playing in the Champions League next season.

Earlier in the week, legendary manager Arsene Wenger had suggested that Europa League winners should not be allowed to qualify for the Champions League in the following season. The ex-Arsenal boss suggested that the winners of the competitions should instead be allowed to compete in the Europa League again. This did not go down well with the Spurs fans and quite rightly so.

It is important to note that the official rules state that Europa League winners automatically qualify for the Champions League. The rule has been in existence of quite some time now and many teams have taken advantage of it. But the sudden outrage from the media comes after Tottenham and Manchester United might get the chance to play in the Champions League even though both teams have endured a disastrous campaign.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou gives no attention to the UCL spot row

Tottenham face a crucial game against Bodo/Glimt in the second leg of the Europa League semi-finals. The Lilywhites won the first leg 3-1 and now stand a great chance of reaching the finals. Spurs face the prospect of playing against Manchester United in the final. The winner of the competition will get the chance of playing Champions League football next season, and this is something that has not gone down well with a lot of people in the English media.

When asked if it was right for the Europa League winners to qualify for Champions League football next season, Ange Postecoglou said in his presser (as transcribed by the BBC),

“It’s a debate that’s been raging for years, at least the last eight days…I’ve never heard it before. Spurs do crazy things to people. You put that club into any sentence or any issue and invariably they all come out and try to diminish it as much as they can. It’s Spurs mate, they love it.”

Big Ange laughed off the debate and suggested that Spurs do crazy things to people. The Australian also suggested that Tottenham will always create headlines and people love to diminish the club’s achievements. The ex-Celtic boss also said that the media loves controversies and they try to stir up new stories when it comes to Spurs.

Ange Postecoglou was in defiant mood in his pre-match press conference. The Spurs manager acted fast to put an end to the debate and defend the integrity of the club. Now, his team are within touching distance of creating history and ending Tottenham’s 17-year wait for a major trophy.
