Tottenham complete Conor Gallagher deal after past ‘priceless’ verdict from Pochettino

Conor Gallagher was close to joining Aston Villa.

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on a move to bring in someone who has been a long-term target at Hotspur Way. And he is a player that former Lilywhites boss Mauricio Pochettino is a huge admirer of.

While we saw the North Londoners crashing out of the FA Cup against Aston Villa at the weekend, the officials at Hotspur Way are not giving up on the season. And that could be seen in the winter window, as we see the club sanction a couple of transfers which could boost the roster going into the second half of the season.

Just as the supporters were waiting for Spurs to announce Souza, the journos have dropped another update that suggests that Tottenham have hijacked Aston Villa’s move for Conor Gallagher. The 25-year-old has been linked with a move to Hotspur Way for some time now, and given the hamstring injury to Rodrigo Bentancur, bringing in the high-energy midfielder became an even bigger priority at N17.

Tottenham closing in on completing Gallagher transfer

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the Lilywhites submitted a €40m bid for the former Chelsea midfielder. And Atletico Madrid are expected to accept that offer as the club prepares a five-and-a-half-year contract for the English international.

The report also goes on to state that Gallagher is excited by the prospect of working under Thomas Frank, who has been under massive pressure of late.

And thinking about this deal from Tottenham’s point of view, the appeal for the North Londoners is obvious. The Lilywhites have been craving for a high-energy box-to-box presence in the middle of the park for some time now. And Gallagher fits that need perfectly.

The former Crystal Palace loanee netted eight goals for Chelsea in the 2021/22 Premier League season. If the 25-year-old can even replicate a portion of that form in front of goal in North London, then he is surely on his way to quickly becoming a fan favourite at N17.

What Mauricio Pochettino has said about Gallagher

If this transfer happens, then Gallagher would become the latest name on what is a big list of players who have played for Tottenham as well as Chelsea. In recent history, he has followed the likes of Dominic Solanke and Timo Werner.

And someone who knows both clubs extremely well is Mauricio Pochettino, given that he managed Tottenham for half a decade before leaving in 2019, and he spent the 2023/24 season in charge at Stamford Bridge.

And during his time at Chelsea, he worked closely with Gallagher. And when we look back, he was full of praise for the possibly-soon-to-be Tottenham midfielder after his standout performance against Crystal Palace.

“I think he is a player with a great commitment to the team,” Pochettino said via BBC Sport in February 2024.

“He is always trying to compensate in every situation, in offensive and defensive situations. It’s priceless to have a player like him.”

Author Opinion

Given that Bentancur will be serving sidelines for a while now, the second phase at N17 is in dire need of fresh energy. And Gallagher looks like an ideal fit for what Tottenham are trying to build under Frank.

If this one is completed, we may finally see a running midfield much like we did at Brentford for years under Frank.

How big an impact do you think Gallagher can have at Tottenham?
