Tottenham Hotspur are witnessing their worst-ever season in the Premier League history. They dropped to 14th in the Premier League table after losing 2-0 to Fulham on Sunday, which was Spurs’ 15th league defeat.
Ange Postecoglou’s position at N17 has come under a lot of scrutiny. The Australian must win the Europa League to give himself a chance to stay at the job for the third successive year in North London. Regardless of what happens with him, the Tottenham officials have started putting plans in place for the upcoming transfer window.
Spurs are eyeing left-back reinforcements this summer and are keen on Wolverhampton Wanderers star Rayan Ait-Nouri. They are reportedly preparing an opening bid of £35m for the defender, although Wolves value him around €50/60 million. As this could lead to complex negotiations, the Lilywhites have also lined up alternative targets to the Algerian international.
According to an exclusive report from The Boy Hotspur, Girona left-back Miguel Gutierrez has emerged as one of the alternative targets to Ait-Nouri, with the other being Everton’s Vitaly Mykolenko.
Since leaving Real Madrid for Girona, Miguel Gutierrez has gone on to establish himself as one of the most reliable and consistent left-backs in La Liga. He has thrived at Girona under Michel, racking up a goal and five assists in 25 La Liga games so far this season. This has led to him attracting interest from top clubs across Europe, including Tottenham.
The Spaniard’s ability to make an impact at both ends of the pitch makes him a decent alternative target to Ait-Nouri for Spurs, who are set to bid farewell to both Sergio Reguilon and Ben Davies as their contracts expire at the end of the season. This would potentially leave the Tottenham gaffer with just one left-back in Destiny Udogie.
While Djed Spence has done an admirable job at left-back when deputising for the injured Udogie and Archie Gray has filled in that position several times this season, a left-footed full-back would be perfect to replace Reguilon in the roster. Gutierrez, in that regard, would be a good fit at White Hart Lane.
Gutierrez could prove to be a very useful acquisition for the Spurs, especially due to his versatility in operating as a left-back, wing-back, and left-sided midfielder. The Madrid-born talent certainly has the quality to succeed in the Premier League and he has shown his ability in La Liga already. At 23, he fits the profile of signings the North London club have made in recent years whilst being a terrific option to bolster their defensive ranks.
All in all, if the Hotspur Way chiefs fail in their pursuit of Ait-Nouri, they must not hesitate to splash the cash on the Girona star.
