Tottenham could be handed Lucas Paqueta transfer boost in summer if ‘this’ happens

West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta has emerged as a target for Tottenham.

Despite the addition of some rich attacking talents during the summer transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur have faced problems creating chances and scoring goals consistently.

The north Londoners have been one-dimensional in midfield, often failing to progress the ball and unlock tight, well-drilled defences. The injury absences of James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski have played a major role in the team’s creativity struggles. Add that to summer signing Xavi Simons failing to live up to the lofty expectations in N17, and the creative onus has largely fallen on the shoulders of Mohammed Kudus.

However, with Kudus now set for a spell on the sidelines after sustaining a thigh injury against Sunderland, Tottenham might struggle more in the final third. This highlights that Thomas Frank still has plenty to address before his team can close the gap on their rivals in the months ahead.

Ben Jacobs says Tottenham are interested in West Ham playmaker Lucas Paqueta

Tottenham are understood to be exploring creative midfield options during the January transfer window as they look to add flair and fluency to their play. Kudus’ injury has further accentuated the need to add a creative player to Thomas Frank’s squad.

The north Londoners are assessing players whose situations at other clubs could open the door for a move, even though Frank recently admitted that signing players in the winter window is the “most difficult”. Yet, one familiar name has re-emerged amid renewed speculation.

As per recent reports, Tottenham are considering a bid for West Ham United playmaker Lucas Paqueta. West Ham are open to selling the player at the right price, although no official bid has been submitted by Spurs.

Lucas Paqueta has been a key figure at West Ham since arriving from French side Lyon in the summer of 2022. However, the Hammers’ dismal display and fight against relegation this season has raised question marks over the futures of several players. The Brazil international is one of those, with his contract at the London Stadium expiring in 2027 (Transfermarkt).

Now, reliable journalist Ben Jacobs has provided an update on Tottenham’s links with Paqueta. He has revealed that while Spurs have the midfielder on their radar, a summer move appears more feasible than now.

“Paqueta. Yes. More business with West Ham. It’s like buses, isn’t it? You don’t do barely any deals since Scott Parker and then Kudus arrives and Paqueta is on the radar as well,” Ben Jacobs said on The Last Word On Spurs podcast.

Should West Ham go down, Tottenham might be handed a transfer boost for Paqueta in the summer:

“So, I’d keep an eye on that one in the summer, and obviously if West Ham go down they’re not going to keep hold of Lucas Paqueta.”

Paqueta to Tottenham makes sense

A deal for Paqueta makes total sense for Tottenham. The Lilywhites have lacked composure, poise and guile in midfield, and adding a player of the Brazilian’s ilk would massively benefit them.

However, having sold Kudus last summer, the West Ham board received a lot of flak from their fans. So, the Irons may be reluctant to do business again immediately and rile up the already disgruntled supporters, especially after finding themselves embroiled in a relegation battle. But if they go down, the Hammers would be forced to part ways with Paqueta, and that is when Tottenham can take advantage of that situation in the summer.
