Tottenham Hotspur will look to bring in defensive reinforcements when the transfer window reopens in June.
Spurs have been defensively all over the place for the majority of the season, The Lilywhites letting in 57 goals from 35 Premier League fixtures, and have only managed to keep six clean sheets. Key defenders such as Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have struggled to stay fit for significant chunks of the campaign, while their back-up Radu Dragusin also suffered an ACL injury in February which will keep him out on the sidelines for the remainder of the season and beyond.
Amid an injury-crisis that mainly affected the backline, Pedro Porro has managed to keep himself fit and strong throughout the season thus far. The right-back has made 48 appearances across all competitions, and he netted an important goal in the 2-0 win over Bodo/Glimt in the second leg of the Europa League semi-final on Thursday night.
A key player for Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs, thanks to his consistency and fitness levels, Porro, though, is wanted by Manchester City this summer. Interestingly, Daniel Levy is open to selling the Spaniard if the right offer comes in, regardless of him establishing himself a reliable player in the first XI over the last two seasons.
Now, according to an exclusive report from Football Insider, Tottenham have identified Panathinaikos right-back Georgios Vagiannidis as a potential replacement for Porro. Clubs like Leeds United, Fulham, Everton and Sporting CP have all been credited with an interest in the Greek.
A product of the Panathinaikos academy, Georgios Vagiannidis has made 103 appearances for the Greek side and even captained them in their Europa Conference League defeat to Fiorentina in the round of 16 in March. He has been a reliable performer for Panathinaikos in recent years, with the attacking right-back’s performances going unnoticed across the European continent.
The four-cap Greece international may be temped by the lure of playing in the Premier League and locking horns with the world’s best players. Europa League finalists Spurs have an exciting project to offer for Vagiannidis, who at 23, would be a good fit at White Hart Lane. The Athens-born talent has displayed his potential in the Greek Super Lig and Europe that suggest he can be a fine potential replacement for Porro ahead of the next season.
A move to Spurs in the summer would be ideal for him, allowing the Panathinaikos star to develop and take his game to the next level. He could provide strong competition for Djed Spence and even play ahead of him as an aggressive winger if required.
With several clubs vying for his signature, the Hotspur Way chiefs must not hesitate to Vagiannidis if Porro is sold this summer.
