There is a growing sense around Hotspur Way that the goalkeeping department is no longer a question of ‘if’ there will be a change, but it looks more like a certainty.
And the latest news around the current number one at N17 in Vicario just reinforces that feeling of revamp.
There has been so much focus on who Tottenham might bring in to take over the duties between the sticks, with Belgian ace Bart Verbruggen being linked with a move to N17, but if we look at the other side of the fence, those potential exit talks for Vicario are now gathering pace, with Inter Milan preparing to fortify their push to sign the former Udinese man as his future in North London continues to be uncertain.
Inter’s interest in signing the 29-year-old is not new; in fact, they have been among conversations for his signature for a while now. But they are starting to think about the prospect of putting their money where their mouth is. (h/t Calciomercato)
Initially, it was all about looking at Vicario and if he could be the ideal successor to Yann Sommer, as Inter didn’t really need someone who could be an immediate replacement in terms of presence in the roster, but rather a long-term solution. And it looks like they have made up their mind on it.
Sommer is thirty-seven (37), and he is still quite reliable. But Inter are clearly planning ahead, and in Vicario they see someone who is still within his peak years. They see a keeper who (despite a difficult time at Tottenham) has a reputation for his consistency and shot-stopping ability.
When Vicario did join Tottenham from Empoli, there was a certain sharpness to his performances, but that has seemingly dropped in the past months, and that has been the core of why he has been linked away. The aforementioned report suggests that a fee around €15-20m is being discussed by Inter, but it is to be seen if Tottenham do let him go for that figure.
Given that Inter are ready to formalise their interest, this is also an opportunity for Roberto de Zerbi to bring a keeper that he prefers according to his playing style.
