Tottenham explore possibility of signing Barcelona captain this summer

Tottenham Hotspur benefit from having one of the best central defensive partnerships in the league, in Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. Whenever fit, the duo are right up there with some of the best in the Premier League.

However, in the past couple of seasons, injuries have seen both players miss out on significant chunks of the campaign. In their absence, Tottenham’s centre-back options look wafer-thin.

Although the club have signed the likes of Radu Dragusin and Kevin Danso in recent seasons, the former is still recovering from an ACL issue while the latter has shown promise in a short stint in North London.

Tottenham Hotspur want Ronald Araujo

Now, as per Fichajes, Tottenham Hotspur are exploring the possibility of signing Barcelona defensive star and second captain Ronald Araujo this summer. The North London club view him as the perfect physical presence and leader in the backline.

Once touted to be the future of Barcelona’s backline, the past couple of seasons hasn’t necessarily been ideal for the 26-year-old South American. He has seen himself fall down the pecking order behind the likes of Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez.

Physical issues have also not allowed Araujo to enjoy continuity for a sustained period of time. While he does have a long-term contract at Barcelona, Tottenham know that the Spanish club are likely to be open for negotiations this summer.

However, the report also mentions that despite Barcelona being open to the idea of the sale, Araujo is unlikely to come cheap to Tottenham this summer. There is an indication from the player’s camp, though, that he would be open to a change of scenery.

Araujo at his best is a beast

Araujo, at his best, is easily one of the best central defenders in the world. He looks imperious in one-on-one situations and is a menace to deal with for the opposition in both boxes. However, it seems unlikely that he would leave Barcelona this summer.

The other problem with the South American star is his torrid injury history. Spurs have had enough injury issues of their own in recent times and the last thing they want to do is add another injury-prone player to their roster.

While the interest in Araujo is understandable from a Spurs perspective, it would be a surprise to see anything come of it in the coming weeks. Let’s wait and see how this particular transfer saga plays out.
