Tottenham are set to battle it out with Aston Villa for the signing of highly-rated AS Roma playmaker Matias Soule

Tottenham Hotspur have already started scouring the transfer market for Morgan Gibbs-White’s alternatives.

The Gibbs-White saga is now officially over, and it was not the ending that Spurs would have hoped for, with the England international staying put at Nottingham Forest and signing a new three-year contract. Tottenham fans are justifiably angry that the club wasted so much time pursuing the creative midfielder, and the pressure is now on Daniel Levy and Johan Lange to find out a suitable alternative from the market and bring him in to London.

Manchester City’s James McAtee has reportedly emerged as an alternative target to Gibbs-White. It turns out that the Lilywhites are also interested in a player from Serie A.

AS Roma talent Matias Soule is on Tottenham radar

According to Italian outlet Radio Radio (h/t Tutto Juve), Tottenham are interested in signing AS Roma playmaker Matias Soule, but face competition from Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

Last summer, Matias Soule joined AS Roma from Juventus on a five-year contract until 2029. The ex-Argentina Under-20 international had a solid debut season in AS Roma colours, operating in multiple positions across midfield and attack and registering 10 goal contributions in 39 games in all formats.

The 22-year-old’s performances have caught the attention of the Premier League duo, and the aforementioned report (h/t Tutto Juve) adds that AS Roma may have to sacrifice Soule to raise funds to bring in new faces to back new manager Gian Piero Gasperini. Both Tottenham and Aston Villa are ready to fork out €32m for the versatile attacker.

Tottenham must beat Villa to Matias Soule’s signing

Tottenham are in the hunt for an attacking midfielder who can unlock rigid defences and connect moves in the final third. Thomas Frank is clearly keen to add to his creative midfield options, especially given James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski’s injury qualms.

Soule, in that regard, would fit the bill nicely. The South American, who can play on the right flank, as a secondary striker and attacking midfielder, could be a strong squad option for Frank. Given how he has the ability to beat the press, create chances, make assists and score goals, the Roma man clearly possesses the attributes to thrive in Frank’s system at White Hart Lane.

Plus, the Argentine has a high ceiling to develop into a top creative attacker if his development is handled right, and under Frank’s watchful guidance, he can fulfil his true potential. That said, Tottenham must do everything possible to beat Villa to Soule’s signing quickly.
