We remember Dimitri Payet for his antics in the Premier League, back in the 2015s, where he was daunting defences with his precise free kicks and flair on his flank. But while it’s been a while since the English fans have seen him, his words will be treated with respect among the supporters.
And Payet’s comments from before have now come ashore, which gives Tottenham Hotspur fans a glimpse of what they can expect from incoming interim head coach Igor Tudor over the next 12 games.
The Lilywhites supporters would know a bit about Tudor already even though he is yet to appear on the bench in an official game for the North Londoners. We already know that Tudor prefers to set up in a three-at-the-back system, which focuses on having a solid defence, while he loves his sides to be compact.
And the former Juventus man has also managed a couple of bright starts when he has been brought in to steady the ship. But doing that in the Premier League is an entirely different story.
Tudor was at Marseille at some point in his career, where he had managed to turn things around for the French giants. He helped them to go on a run of eight straight wins, which ironically came after their Champions League exit to Tottenham back in 2023.
Igor came in and introduced a high-pressing system which maintained a high line and playing on the front foot when with the Ligue 1 outfit, and he went on to win eight of his first 10 games.
And Dimitri Payet, speaking about Tudor in the build-up to his exit in 2023, spoke about Igor’s approach while he also went on to speak on how the squad reacted to his methods. He said (via France Football):
“We all got acquainted with someone who was coarse and blunt. In his manners and words, he was authoritative. We were all a bit shocked.
“With a little hindsight, he was excessively harsh at first to mark his territory and implement some measures. Then, it was a bit better.”
Tottenham players need a sense of authority on the touchline, especially right now given how they have been struggling on the pitch, and that is exactly what he brings to the table. We have seen him come into situations where he needs to steady the ship multiple times, and he will need to do that with his two feet down at Hotspur Way given that the Lilywhites are on a run of just a couple of wins in 17 games.
If he can somehow manage to replicate the methods that he deployed at Marseille at Tottenham, then it will not take long for fans to get behind him. Hopefully that helps Tottenham in this hanging relegation battle.
