Lucas Bergvall has proven to be a big success in his debut season at Tottenham Hotspur

Back in February 2024, Tottenham Hotspur agreed a deal with Swedish side Djurgardens If for Lucas Bergvall to arrive at White Hart Lane later in July.

There was excitement surrounding the arrival of Lucas Bergvall at the club after Spurs had beaten Barcelona to his signature. The lure to play for Tottenham and in the Premier League was bigger for him than joining Barcelona, and the move has worked very well as far as his debut season in North London is concerned.

The Swedish midfielder was naturally not expected to be involved so much in his first year at the club under Ange Postecoglou. Yet, due to a combination of injury problems and suspensions, the youngster got the opportunity to stake his claim and he grabbed it with both hands. Bergvall made 45 appearances across all competitions, netting a goal and supplying four assists.

The teenager’s brilliant first season has earned him a new long-term contract too, and while he couldn’t feature in the Europa League final win over Manchester United in Bilbao last week owing to an unfortunate ankle ligament damage, his contributions toward the club attaining European glory must not be forgotten.

Now, Djurgardens IF sporting director Bosse Andersson has confirmed in an interview with Fotbollskanalen that all bonuses related to Bergvall’s sale to Tottenham have been activated. The Swedish club official jokingly admitted before that he expected it would take years for the bonuses part of the agreement to trigger.

“I can confirm that all the bonus parts that are included have clicked in,” Andersson said.

“Lucas has had such progress both in the Premier League and in Europe and has been involved in so many matches. We can say that what we thought it would take several years has happened very quickly.”

This gives a glimpse into the success of Tottenham’s recruitment strategy, especially Bergvall’s signing. Djurgardens all set to get their bonus related payments from his sale shows the central midfielder has been a roaring hit in his first year at N17 itself. It also sheds light on how bright the future can be for the club if Bergvall goes onto fulfil his vast potential.

Truth be told, the Stockholm-born talent has surpassed all expectations of the fans, coaches and club officials alike. It initially took him time to adjust to the demands of Premier League football, but once he got used to it, there has been no looking back. Bergvall’s success story also gives mileage to the North London’s recruitment strategy, backing the officials and scouts to continue finding gems all across the world.
