Tottenham Hotspur got back to winning ways as Ange Postecoglou’s side thrashed Southampton 5-0 at St Mary’s Park to take the three points alongside much-needed confidence back to North London, and one of the players beaming with stride in his step will be James Maddison.
The England international has been enduring a tough campaign that saw him demoted to a bench role this season; however, with Yves Bissouma serving a suspension, Maddison got into the side and took the game by its neck. He netted in the opening minute of the game to ensure that the Lilywhites start on the front foot before doubling his tally before the halftime whistle to complete a brace and Spurs five-star first-half performance.
Former Leicester City midfielder has spoken about how this side has the ability to blow away teams like they did with Southampton; however, he demands more consistency in these performances. Speaking in an interview with TNT Sports after the game, Maddison said (via. BBC):
“It was a great night for us. It’s an important night. There are so many big teams all throughout the league that are struggling to get results and are on a tough patch. We were on one tonight. It was important to get that win. That was a big night for us.
“We can blow away any team in this league, and not just Southampton. We did the same at Manchester City. But we need to do it on a regular basis. We showed grit and determination, especially after a rapid turnaround after Glasgow. I am proud of the boys.”
Maddison’s early goal energised the Lilywhites, allowing the visitors to dominate proceedings throughout the game and build on that confidence throughout the ninety minutes, and the Lilywhites supporters, as well as Ange Postecoglou, will hope that this result will serve as a turning point for the club’s recently lacking fortunes, especially with the Premier League entering its busy festive period.
