Tottenham handed transfer fright as Manchester City eye summer move for defensive star

Tottenham will have to fend off interest from Manchester City for Destiny Udogie

Tottenham Hotspur star Destiny Udogie has quickly cemented his status as a fan favourite since arriving from Udinese in 2023. The dynamic left-back has delivered consistently strong performances, becoming a key figure in Ange Postecoglou’s system. However, like many of his teammates this season, Udogie has had to contend with injury setbacks, most notably a hamstring issue that sidelined him for a month.

Now back in the fold, the 23-year-old’s return is a timely boost for Spurs as they gear up for a crucial Europa League quarter-final clash against Eintracht Frankfurt. Having the Italy international available will undoubtedly strengthen Postecoglou’s squad as they push for European glory.

Udogie has been instrumental in the way Ange Postecoglou sets up his team. His presence provides both defensive stability and attacking quality down the left flank, making him a vital asset in both halves of the pitch. With the pressure mounting from both fans and the media, and Postecoglou’s future increasingly uncertain, Tottenham urgently need to string together positive results. Having Udogie back in the lineup could prove crucial as the North London club looks to steady the ship and make a strong push in the final stretch of the season.

Destiny Udogie heading for Tottenham exit?

The Italy international is widely regarded as one of the most consistent full-backs in the Premier League this season. According to Sofascore, the 22-year-old has made 29 appearances across all competitions, registering one assist. However, his impact goes far beyond the stats sheet—Udogie has delivered 19 key passes, completed 86 tackles, and made 27 interceptions, underlining his importance on both ends of the pitch.

Now, according to GiveMeSport, his performances have caught the eye of Manchester City. The reigning champions have added Udogie to their summer shortlist, with new sporting director Hugo Viana said to be a long-time admirer of the defender dating back to his Udinese days. A move to the Etihad could be on the cards, but Tottenham will be determined to hold onto one of their most valuable assets.

However, negotiating a deal for Destiny Udogie won’t be straightforward, as Tottenham view the Italian full-back as a vital part of their long-term plans. The 22-year-old is considered ‘untouchable’ by the North London club, and with his contract running until 2030, Spurs hold all the cards. Any potential suitor, including Manchester City, would need to submit a substantial offer to even tempt the club into considering a sale. For now, Tottenham remain firmly in the driver’s seat regarding Udogie’s future.

Will Udogie make the switch to Manchester? At this stage, it seems unlikely. Tottenham are not expected to entertain negotiations easily, especially given the defender’s importance to their setup. With Sergio Reguilon also expected to depart N17 this summer, the North London club can hardly afford to lose another left-back in the same window. Udogie remains a key figure in Spurs’ future plans, and the club will do everything in their power to keep hold of him.
