Winning the Europa League in Bilbao turned out to be the saving grace Tottenham Hotspur needed after a massively underwhelming domestic campaign.
Ange Postecoglou and his boys had nowhere to hear after finishing the Premier League campaign on 17th spot. However, the European success saved their blushes and now has given the club bosses to start a new era at N17.
Spurs need fresh blood in various areas of the pitch. A versatile forward to compete with the current crop of players as well as provide quality squad depth, would suffice for the next season. They have been linked with several attackers in recent weeks and months, including Southampton talent Tyler Dibling.
Tottenham saw a £35m bid for Tyler Dibling rejected by Southampton during the January transfer window. Despite the Saints suffering relegation after a forgettable Premier League season, they were demand an eye-watering £100m for the English prodigy. While the price has dropped to a realistic £55m of late, Spurs still find that valuation as too high.
According to Football Insider senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke, Tottenham remain hopeful of lowering Southampton’s revised price further down and sign Dibling for £40–£45million. They are planning to finance a move for the teenager by selling Richarlison in the summer.
“Spurs bid £35million in January, which Southampton quickly rejected”, Pete O’Rourke said on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast.
“With Southampton suffering relegation, it’s going to be really hard for them to keep hold of the teenager. That valuation of £55million asking price might be too high… Spurs will be hoping they can negotiate with Southampton and get him for £40–£45million.
“[Dibling] fits Tottenham’s strategy perfectly, signing the best young talent and giving them first-team football to make an instant impact. With Son staying, Dibling linked, and Richarlison likely to be moved on… there’s got to be some restructuring at Tottenham this summer.”
Dibling was one of the rare bright sparks in an otherwise dismal season for the Saints. He gave the fans immense joy with his creativity, flair, pace and dribbling skills. The Exeter-born starlet’s breakout Premier League season in a Southampton shirt has caught the attention of many clubs across the European continent.
The England youth international would be an excellent signing for Tottenham due to his dynamic skill set, versatility and potential to address squad needs. His 2024/25 Premier League campaign with the South Coast club showcased his potential, and his ability to unsettle defences with movement, dribbles and high pressing.
Spurs seeking depth in wide areas, with uncertainties around futures of players like Son Heung-min and Richarlison, would benefit from Dibling’s versatility as touchline winger, inside forward or as a false 9. Despite needing polish in certain aspects of his game, the Englishman’s rise in stature suggests he can develop into a star in the English top flight.
All in all, the left-footed flyer would represent a fantastic long-term investment for Tottenham. It remains to be seen whether Daniel Levy’s club submit a bid for Dibling.
