Before the days of Senne Lammens, Manchester United had struggled to find a decent goalkeeper to replace the brilliance of David de Gea.
Before the Spaniard struggled to adapt to the modern Premier League, which saw an growing importance for those between the sticks being able to be good with the ball at the feet, he was one of the best around.
Andre Onana – whose Old Trafford future is reportedly coming to a permanent end in the summer – immediately replaced De Gea when he arrived in 2023 but he quickly proved that he was not reliable enough.
Altay Bayindir, signed to be a back-up to the Cameroonian, has also proved to be too inconsistent in his rare appearances and that’s what prompted Ruben Amorim to sign Lammens.
The young Belgian is, of course, not the finished article but his start to life in a Manchester United shirt is a sign of things to come.
It’s one of the most ridiculed positions in world football, being the goalkeeper for the English behemoths, but Lammens has taken to his role like a duck to water.
But largely thanks to the club’s unwavering trust in De Gea, someone who wasn’t given a fair shot at taking the No.1 spot was Dean Henderson.
Henderson, 29, left the club and joined Crystal Palace in 2023 after a promising season on loan at Nottingham Forest – and now, Tottenham Hotspur have been credited with an interest in the shot stopper.
According to a report from The Daily Mail, Henderson is ‘under consideration’ by Spurs higher-ups this summer.
Manchester City’s James Trafford and Noah Atubolu are also named in the report but it’s claimed that Henderson’s ‘leadership and experience’ is an attractive prospect for a team that are flirting with relegation.
At the time of writing, Tottenham have both Guglielmo Vicario and Antonin Kinsky as their two goalkeeping options but neither have proved themselves in north London.
A four-cap England international, Dean Henderson rose through the Carrington ranks after joining from Carlisle United at the age of 14.
In August 2014, he put pen to paper on his first professional contract at the club and a series of loan stints – from Grimsby Town to Sheffield United – beckoned as means to help his development.
Things never quite worked out for the goalkeeper at Old Trafford, though, and he ultimately made 29 senior appearances before departing.
In that time, he kept 13 clean sheets and conceded a total of 25 goals but it wasn’t enough to see him earn the starting berth between the posts.
An FA Cup winner with the Eagles, Henderson would be a brilliant addition for a team in Spurs’ current state – but whether they could lure him away from Palace remains to be seen.
