Tottenham enter race to sign Atletico Madrid defender Reinildo Mandava on a free transfer this summer

Tottenham Hotspur are facing a big rebuilding job, and they have kicked off their summer well by signing Kevin Danso permanently for £21 million from RC Lens.

It is not yet clear whether Danso is an in-house replacement for Cristian Romero or a squad option for next season, but his acquisition is a smart one. Spurs are in desperate need for defensive reinforcements after the problems they have faced last season—both in terms of quality and depth. A glut of injuries was the main factor behind the North Londoners’ lack of stability and consistency in defence, something Daniel Levy must address during this transfer window.

Having announced that Sergio Reguilon will leave the club upon the expiry of his contract later this month, current boss Ange Postecoglou has just one natural left-back in Destiny Udogie at his disposal. Djed Spence and Archie Gray operated at left-back at times last season, but it is worth noting that the former is a right-back and the latter is a midfielder by trade. Thus, it makes sense for the club bosses to replace Reguilon in the Spurs squad.

According to a report from Africa Foot, Tottenham have joined the race for the signing of Atletico Madrid left-back Reinildo Mandava. Other Premier League clubs such as Fulham and Crystal Palace are also vying for his signature.

The Mozambique international was set to become a free agent this June, but Atletico Madrid have extended his contract briefly in order for him to participate in the Club World Cup. His contract will now expire in August, which will then allow clubs to snap him up on a free transfer. Spurs have put their hat on the ring for Reinildo Mandava, who has made over 100 appearances across three-and-a-half seasons at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Being an experienced player who can also operate in an advanced role on the left, the 31-year-old would be a solid option to bolster Tottenham’s defensive options for next season. The Beira-born left-back possesses the attributes to thrive in the hustle and bustle of Premier League football, and he’d be a reliable cover for Udogie.

Spurs need a bigger squad to compete for next season’s Champions League, and Reinildo’s knowhow of the competition could come in handy for them.

Set to lose Reguilon on a free transfer, it would make total sense to replace the Spaniard by snapping the African defender up on a free transfer from Atletico. With many clubs circling, Tottenham must intensify their effort to land Reinildo in August.
