Tottenham Hotspur will seek reinforcements in various areas of the pitch during the summer transfer window.
Spurs need a structural reset and new players need to be brought in if the club wants to close the gap to its rivals and compete at the top end of the Premier League table. The Hotspur Way chiefs have to move on the deadwood first before replacing them with fresh blood in the squad.
One player who is expected to be moved on at the end of the season is Yves Bissouma. The combative midfielder is about to enter the final year of his contract, and having not lived up to the expectations of the White Hart Lane faithful in three years, the club bosses will listen to offers for him this summer. Aston Villa have already expressed an interest in the Mali international.
Tottenham will have to replace Bissouma if he is sold, and one player has been on their radar for a while now. According to an exclusive report from Caught Offside, Tottenham are leading the race for the signing of LOSC Lille midfielder Angel Gomes.
Angel Gomes is attracting plenty of interest as he comes to the end of his Lille contract. The England international has shone during his time in Ligue 1, after failing to break into the senior Manchester United side. He is enjoying life in France and has been linking up with talents like Jonathan David, Ethan Mbappe and Chuba Akpom throughout this season.
With plans to ease the creative burden currently placed on James Maddison’s shoulders, Spurs have to make a move for Gomes. The 24-year-old is admired for his versatility and technical ability, and with his contract set to expire this summer, the North Londoners see an opportunity to land him on a free transfer—a smart and cost-effective move in a transfer window where several areas of the squad need reinforcing.
The diminutive Englishman would be a good fit in the Tottenham midfield unit, complementing and competing with talents like Maddison, Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray and Pape Matar Sarr. Plus, there would be no reason why Gomes would reject the Lilywhites if they win the Europa League and subsequently qualify for the Champions League.
However, the aforementioned report adds that Manchester United are considering to hijack Tottenham’s move for Gomes. In addition, clubs such as Everton, Crystal Palace, Juventus and Marseille.
That said, it would not be easy for Spurs to lure Gomes away from Lille to North London. Tottenham have an exciting project that could be led by a new boss next season, which may prove tempting for the Edmonton-born talent to accept.
