The return of a homegrown player often triggers a certain nostalgia, and even more so when the player in question has matured away from the gaze of the club where he was born. Dennis Cirkin, a left-back who came through the Tottenham youth ranks in 2021, has completed a solid spell at Sunderland.
His name is once again being bandied about in the corridors of north London. With the Champions League on the horizon, Tottenham are exploring options that fit within the quota of locally-trained players, and Cirkin’s profile is starting to fit more and more clearly into the plans of the new sporting leaders.
According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Tottenham have made preliminary contact with Sunderland to bring back the 23-year-old defender. Cirkin has been a key figure in the Wearside club’s recent campaign. The Englishman has displayed consistency, defensive judgment and attacking potential.
The London club see him as an ideal alternative to Destiny Udogie, a regular starter in that area. We also reported earlier that Real Madrid and AC Milan are keeping tabs on Udogie. The operation is also part of the need to strengthen the group of players with national training, a requirement that carries weight in European competitions. Sunderland, meanwhile, are preparing for their exit and are already working on signings such as Reinildo and Malvin Bard.
Tottenham’s interest has several interpretations. Firstly, Cirkin represents a young profile, with experience in the Championship and experience in demanding environments. Although he did not make his first-team debut while at Spurs, his development at Sunderland has been steady.
In Thomas Frank’s system, which values intense, disciplined full-backs capable of alternating roles depending on the opposition, Cirkin fits as a reliable replacement. He is not expected to displace Udogie, but he is expected to offer quality minutes without the overall level of the team suffering.
Tactically, Frank will need profiles that are attack-minded but capable of holding up the defensive line without the need for constant support. Cirkin, with his good positional sense and ability to push forward as a wing-back, can adapt relatively easily. He is not explosive, but he is consistent. If the current approach to the market is maintained, Tottenham should make a bid in the region of £10-12 million. This is a reasonable figure for a player who knows the club, understands his environment and adds up both in sporting and regulatory terms. With a squad that needs depth without overspending, such a deal could make all the difference at the end of the season. Meanwhile, Galatasaray are ready to make an offer for Richarlison.
