Tottenham Hotspur are set to embark on a massive summer. Qualification for the Champions League next season was seen as crucial to their summer plans with several players targeted.
Ange Postecoglou has fulfilled the objective of winning the Europa League in Bilbao and getting the club back in the Champions League. Now, the Hotspur Way chiefs have started identifying the crucial areas of the squad that need addressing. And it appears they are planning to bolster the left-back department before the 2025/26 season commences.
According to Brazilian outlet Trivela, Tottenham are set to battle Manchester United and Bournemouth for the signing of Botafogo left-back Cuiabano. In addition to the Premier League trio, clubs from Turkey and France have also made contact to ask about the defender’s situation.
Cuiabano, 22, has been Botafogo’s standout player in recent months, operating in an advanced role than performing his usual left-back duties. He has two goals and three assists in 20 appearances across all competitions this season, with his performances catching the eye of several clubs.
The aforementioned report adds Tottenham and their Premier League rivals have made ‘more advanced enquires’ about the Brazilian. The 22-year-old’s agent recently travelled to Europe, including a trip to England, but it is not clear whether he held talks with the Premier League troika.
As for Spurs, Destiny Udogie has been the first-choice left-back under Ange Postecoglou. The Italian’s consistent performances have seen him being linked with a move to AC Milan, but his agent last week Stefano Antonelli quashed such rumours. This means he is all set to stay at the club. So, any interest in Cuiabano is about not replacing Udogie but to cover and compete with him next season.
Fast, agile and dynamic, Cuiabano would be a strong option to bolster the Lilywhites’ defensive ranks. He could come in and challenge Udogie for a spot in the first XI, while his versatility to operate in advanced areas should appeal to the boss. The Brazilian Under-20 international works extremely hard off the ball too, making him a perfect fit for Ange Postecoglou’s style of football if the Greek-Aussie tactician stays.
Botafogo are open to accepting offers in the region of €10-€15m for Cuiabano during this upcoming summer transfer window, so Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has to do everything possible to crack a deal for him and get him to North London.
