Tottenham Hotspur’s season is hanging by a thread. The Lilywhites have a crucial tie against Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt coming up in a few days in the Europa League semi-finals. It is a great chance for Ange Postecoglou to save his job at N17 and to end the long-awaited trophy drought at Tottenham. However, before that, Spurs take on Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League.
It is a historic game for the Merseyside club, as winning (or drawing) the game would help them clinch their 20th league title. But for Ange’s men, it is a game of little to no importance. The North London club have already shifted their focus to the Europa League and are not focusing on domestic fixtures anymore. The home defeat to Nottingham Forest last week ensured that Ange Postecoglou would be resting key players before the all-important Europa League tie.
That being said, it is also important that some of the players in the squad get minutes under their belt and remain match-fit before facing the Norwegian club on Thursday. Fans will hope that Big Ange rotates the squad at Anfield and gives adequate minutes to backup players as well. The ex-Celtic boss has to manage the task of balancing Premier League and Europa League duties as he prepares for a season-defining week.
So, how are Tottenham going to line up against Liverpool on Sunday? Let’s have a look.
Ange Postecoglou has suggested that Tottenham face no injury concerns as such heading into the game against Liverpool. The Australian said in his pre-match presser (as transcribed by Football.london),
“We don’t really have injury problems. We’ve only got really one that’s kind of…obviously Sonny’s the one that’s kind of working, trying to work his way back, and he’s improving, which is positive for us, not for Sunday, but apart from obviously the longer term ones, everyone else from the last game has backed up really well, so rest of the squads fit and available.”
So, starting with the goalkeeper, there is no doubt that Guglielmo Vicario will get the nod between the sticks for Spurs. The Italy international was at fault for one of the goals conceded in the last Premier League game against Nottingham Forest, but he has done enough to warrant a second chance in the starting eleven.
Moving onto the defence, Ange Postecoglou might end up making some wholesale changes at the back. There is a possibility that Pedro Porro might be rested for the Liverpool game, and he would be replaced by Archie Gray at right-back. Destiny Udogie might also sit out and Djed Spence would come in his place at left-back. Key centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have just returned from long-term injuries, so they might not be risked, with Ben Davies and Kevin Danso taking their place.
In midfield, it looks like James Maddison and Lucas Bergvall would feature in some capacity, given the duo did not start against Nottingham Forest on Monday and need to remain match-fit. The pair would be accompanied by Yves Bissouma to complete the midfield three.
The attacking line would also see a few changes. Club captain Heung-Min Son remains injured, so Mathys Tel is likely to start on the left wing and fill the void. It is unlikely that Dominic Solanke would be risked at Anfield, so Richarlison would start as the main striker. On the right wing, it is certain that Wilson Odobert would start the game in place of Brennan Johnson, with the latter getting the nod against Bodo/Glimt instead.
When asked if he would want his team to go through the Liverpool game unscathed, Big Ange said in his presser (as transcribed by Football.london),
“I think you want to do more than that. You want to go there and compete against, obviously, a very good side, and compete well and its not just about getting through unscathed you want to get through having played well against the top team. And I think irrespective of what’s on the horizon. That’s the primary importance.”
The Spurs manager wants his team to perform well and not focus too much on the upcoming Europa League semi-final clash. The Australian has also suggested that some players might get a chance to impress against Liverpool and earn a place in the starting eleven on Thursday against Bodo/Glimt.
