Tottenham are in talks with Liverpool over a deal for their left-back. If Spurs pull this off, it will feel like one of those signings that instantly changes the mood around the club. The star in question? Andy Robertson. Despite him being 31, this is still one of the Premier League’s defining left-backs of the last decade, a serial winner, and a player who brings standards that Tottenham have been crying out for all season.
What makes it even better is the timing. Spurs originally planned to go after Robertson as a free agent in the summer when his contract expires in the summer, but they have brought that plan forward to strengthen Thomas Frank’s squad immediately, and talks are described as amicable, with all parties trying to get it done properly. That alone tells you that it is Tottenham seeing a problem area and moving quickly. [The Athletic]
From Robertson’s side, it makes complete sense. He has slipped behind Milos Kerkez in the pecking order at Anfield and has started only four Premier League matches this season, despite making 21 appearances in all competitions. He has been clear that he wants to stay at Liverpool, but he is also a player who wants to play, especially with the World Cup on the horizon for Scotland. Spurs can offer him exactly that. The Reds have let go of quite a number of first-team players over the summer, and it shows that they also seem susceptible to change. Check out David Ornstein’s tweet where he broke the news:
EXCL: Tottenham Hotspur working on deal to sign Andy Robertson from Liverpool. #THFC brought forward plan to vie for 31yo #LFC left-back as free agent this summer; not done but talks between all parties advancing in bid to reach agreement @TheAthleticFC https://t.co/v1Wocekavz

In a subsequent update, Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg also added that verbal agreement was reached for the £160,000 star. Check out his tweet here:

It would be massive for Tottenham also because the left-back situation has been patchwork. Destiny Udogie has been first-choice when fit, but he has managed only 10 Premier League games this season due to injury. Djed Spence has been deputising, Archie Gray and even Micky van de Ven have had spells there, and now Ben Davies is set for surgery on an ankle fracture. Spurs have even brought in 19-year-old Souza from Santos, but that is a development signing, not a ready-made leader for a club trying to stabilise right now.
That is why Robertson would be such a BOSS signing. He is an instant upgrade in experience and edge for the entire squad. This is a player with 363 Liverpool appearances, 68 assists, two Premier League titles, and a Champions League winner’s medal. He sets the tempo, he talks constantly, and he competes like it matters. Even this season you can still see the intensity in him.
It also fits the current Tottenham reality. Spurs have been better in the Champions League than domestically, sitting fifth in the European table heading into the final league-phase fixtures. Adding a player like Robertson for that run-in is exactly the kind of move that can help a fragile side handle big nights, because he has lived them for years.
Yes, it is a short-term age profile, but Tottenham need some short-term guarantees in this squad. Robertson might be closer to the back end than the beginning, but he has still got the dawg in him, and if Spurs land him, they are not buying a farewell tour.
But why would Liverpool want to do away with Robertson, especially after naming him as the vice-captain of the side post Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid? Regardless, only time will tell that. For Spurs, the situation is as straight as an arrow. Convince Liverpool, and boom.
