Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo might be open for a January move to Tottenham if his situation at Old Trafford does not improve

Tottenham managed to end the summer transfer window on a high by bringing in two world-class players – Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani. The Lilywhites addressed most of their on-pitch issues by bringing in reinforcements. However, the North London club failed to land a new midfielder in the summer, despite making a prolonged effort to sign a new #8.

Fans will now be hoping that the lack of depth in the middle of the park does not come back to haunt Thomas Frank. At present, Spurs have Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur who can operate in that position, but that may not be enough if the Lilywhites want to compete hard on all four fronts this season.

Another concern is that Bentancur looks all set to head for new pastures next summer. The Uruguay international’s Spurs contract expires at the end of the season, which could force Tottenham to sell him on a free transfer if he decides to reject a new contract proposal. Not only that, but the injury sustained by James Maddison leaves Thomas Frank short of options in the middle of the park for crucial games this season.

Tottenham still not giving up in the chase for Man United star Kobbie Mainoo

Tottenham are already planning further reinforcements for the January transfer window. The Lilywhites are aiming to build on the Europa League success this season, so signing quality players in the winter will be seen as a priority. With Yves Bissouma expected to head for pastures new around that time, the North London club will be forced to sign a replacement quickly.

It was reported earlier that Spurs had been keen on signing Kobbie Mainoo from Manchester United in the summer. The England international had informed the Red Devils he was open to leave in search of more game time. The Lilywhites took notice of that and tried to lure Mainoo to N17 by offering him a chance to play Champions League football under Thomas Frank. However, the deal fell through and youngster decided to stay put instead.

Now, there is a fresh update on the 20-year-old’s future at M16. As per Flashscore, Tottenham are not giving up on their pursuit of Kobbie Mainoo. The England international has barely featured for Man United this season, and it appears he could be allowed to leave in January. The report also adds that Mainoo is remaining patient for now, but may be open to a winter move if his situation does not improve in the coming months.

Signing a player of Mainoo’s calibre will certainly bolster Tottenham’s midfield for the long-term. The England international is technically brilliant and likes to control the tempo of the game. Not only that, but the 20-year-old also tends to thrive in transition and tight spaces, giving opposition defences plenty to ponder about.
