Chris Waddle doubts Ange Postecoglou’s longevity at Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur’s domestic campaign has been nothing short of disastrous, with the Lilywhites languishing in 16th place in the Premier League and once again failing to secure any domestic silverware. The Europa League now stands as their only shot at redemption, a chance to finally bring a trophy back to north London after years of frustration.

Despite guiding the team to a European final, Ange Postecoglou’s future remains shrouded in uncertainty. As the final whistle blew on Spurs’ emphatic semi-final victory over Bodo/Glimt, speculation over the Australian’s tenure only intensified.

Former Spurs winger Chris Waddle, speaking in an interview with Yay Sweepstakes, cast doubt over Postecoglou’s position, suggesting that the club may already be considering a managerial change. Waddle’s remarks echo growing whispers that the 59-year-old may not survive the summer, even if he lifts the Europa League trophy.

Chris Waddle has strongly pushed back against the notion that Ange Postecoglou’s future at Tottenham should hinge solely on the outcome of the Europa League final. The former Spurs winger dismissed such thinking as shortsighted, insisting that the club must take a broader view and assess the manager’s overall performance rather than basing a crucial decision on a single result.

Speaking candidly, Waddle emphasized the need for a long-term vision at Tottenham, criticizing the club’s tendency to make impulsive decisions under pressure. He pointed to Spurs’ current league position, fifth from bottom, as a glaring indicator of systemic issues that a solitary cup triumph would not resolve.

Grouping Tottenham with fellow underachievers West Ham and Manchester United, Waddle argued that the club’s substantial off-pitch investments must now be matched by consistent on-field results. For him, the focus should be on building a stable, sustainable project rather than making reactionary changes based on one game.

The Former Spurs winger went all out with the criticism

Chris Waddle also delivered a scathing assessment of Tottenham’s direction, criticising both the club’s transfer policy and Ange Postecoglou’s tactical inflexibility. The former Spurs winger believes the consistent loss of world-class players like Bale, Modric, and Kane has held the club back from real progress. He also questioned Postecoglou’s lack of a plan B, but stressed that the problems at Tottenham stem from a deeper systemic failure rather than one man alone.

The Former Winger speaking to Yay Sweepstakes, expressed his concerns

“Personally, I think they’ll get rid. I think they’ll look for someone else. But let’s get something right here. I’m not blaming Ange for everything.”

“Look at the managers Tottenham Hotspur have had. Now, Jose Mourinho, serial title, serial medal winner. Antonio Conte, top of the Italian league. Nuno Espirito Sanato might get Nottingham Forest in the Champions League. How can it be that these managers are not good enough yet? They go to other clubs and they succeed.”

“Spurs need to look at how they run themselves, and how they operate in the market. In my eyes, that is the problem. Tottenham have always been a massive football club. Great supporters. It’s a great club. It really is.”

Waddle is adamant that Tottenham Hotspur need to fundamentally rethink their approach if they are to escape their current malaise. Speaking candidly, the former Spurs winger emphasized that the club must follow the blueprint set by successful sides like Liverpool and Manchester City, where acquiring and retaining top-tier talent is prioritized as the foundation for sustained success.

Waddle argued that no managerial change alone will be sufficient to lift Spurs out of their slump, as the issues run far deeper than who occupies the dugout. While winning the Europa League could provide a watershed moment and a platform to rebuild, it might not be enough to secure Ange Postecoglou’s future, especially given the club’s dismal league standing.
