It looks like Tottenham Hotspur are prioritising defensive reinforcements in this summer transfer window.
The North Londoners struggled for consistency at the back throughout the last campaign, with their defensive frailties proving costly in key moments. They also went through an injury crisis, hampering any kind of stability at the back.
Adding to the concerns, the club could be set to lose one of their most important defenders. Cristian Romero has publicly expressed his desire to play in Spain at some point in his career. With Atletico Madrid keen on securing the Argentina international’s services, there is growing uncertainty over his future in North London.
Spurs are about to sign young Japanese defender Kota Takai from Kawasaki Frontale. However, they need more than Takai to rebuild their defensive spine for the next season. This has seen the Lilywhites express an interest in signing Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite.
Jarrad Branthwaite has made a name for himself as one the reliable young defenders in the Premier League. In a season full of ups and downs, the England international was one of their better players and his performances has unsurprisingly gone unnoticed across the Premier League. However, Tottenham have now received a setback in their efforts to pursue a deal for the 22-year-old.
According to reputable journalist Fabrizio Romano on X, Everton are in advanced talks over new deal for Branthwaite. He is expected to sign a new deal at the club until 2030.

For months, Branthwaite has looked like the perfect fit at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Young, strong, athletic and composed on the ball. Plus, he is left-footed and can operate at left-back when required. At 23, the Englishman has already shown maturity beyond his years and has now got two strong years of Premier League experience under his belt.
However, Branthwaite has now decided to commit his future to the Toffees and is expected to sign a bumper new deal. With him staying, Spurs will have to shift focus to alternative defensive targets this summer.
It was reported earlier this year that Tottenham are hold an interest in Lazio star Mario Gila. If that still stands true, then the North London club must begin negotiations for Gila quickly and bring him to N17 as Romero’s potential replacement for next season.
