Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs interested in the Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi this summer.
The 24-year-old is expected to leave the Eagles and join a big club. Arsenal and Liverpool are keen on the player as well. According to Alasdair Gold, the priority for Guehi is to play regularly, especially with the World Cup coming up next year. He will only join a club where he will be guaranteed regular gametime.
Gold believes that Tottenham’s move for the 24-year-old defender could now indirectly depend on the future of Cristian Romero.
He said on Football London: “Spurs have been long-time admirers of Guehi and made an approach in January that was rebuffed by Palace. Guehi’s priority is believed to be regular playing time wherever he goes and while Spurs can offer Champions League football as well this season, they are currently packed with central defenders in Romero, Van de Ven, Danso, Dragusin, Davies as well as younger players like Vuskovic, Phillips and Dorrington.
Of course Guehi likely starts if Romero goes and maybe if he doesn’t, and there is the potential that Frank would maybe play with a back three if he didn’t, but you would imagine Romero’s future would need to be sorted out first and by that time others may have made their move.”
Tottenham are well-stocked in the defensive unit if the South American decides to stay at the club. However, if he leaves, Guehi could be the ideal replacement. It remains to be seen what the player decides. He has been linked with Atletico Madrid in recent weeks.
There is no doubt that he is one of the best players at the club, and he helped Tottenham win the UEFA Europa League season.
Meanwhile, Guehi is entering the final year of his contract with Crystal Palace, and he does not want to sign an extension with them. He will look to move on and join an ambitious project. It remains to be seen where he ends up.
He has been one of the best defenders in the league, and he has been labelled as an “exceptional” player. There is no doubt that he would be a quality acquisition for Tottenham, Arsenal or Liverpool.
Given his contract situation, he could be available for a reasonable amount of money as well. Tottenham have been long-term admirers, and they will now look to sort out the future of Romero and then decide on a move for the Englishman.
