Tottenham Hotspur fans would have been pleased when the club announced the capture of Mohammed Kudus from London rivals West Ham United earlier this month.
The transfer saga was far from straightforward, as the Lilywhites had to endure three rejected bids from West Ham before a fourth offer was eventually accepted. The African talent’s arrival saw him become the first player to transfer between Spurs and the Hammers since Scott Parker back in 2011.
Mohammed Kudus was a revelation during his first Premier League season after arriving from Ajax in 2023, tormenting defences with his speed, flair, directness and dribbling. While the Ghana international’s performance levels dipped the previous campaign, he still managed 28 goal contributions in 48 appearances during his two-year stay at the London Stadium.
The 24-year-old has crossed the capital with a point to prove, and the Spurs fans will be hoping that he can rediscover his mojo. And they got a glimpse of Kudus’ potential last weekend against Reading in the summer’s first pre-season friendly, grabbing an assist for Luka Vuskovic’s goal after entering the fray in the second half.
After Kudus’ display against Reading, Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham has compared him with former Tottenham midfielder Moussa Dembele
Mousa Dembele swapped Fulham for Tottenham back in 2012 and produced many memorable displays at the heart of their midfield. Injuries were a significant part of the Belgian’s inability to fully unlock his potential at Tottenham, but when fully fit and running, he was a class act and single-handedly bullied his opponents.
Drawing comparisons between them, John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News:
“He did really well against Reading, and there were a couple of really good movements from him where he got out of tight spaces.
“He can dribble and carry the ball with strength and with power in a similar way that Dembele had, albeit he’s a winger. The assist was fantastic, laying it off to his other foot and playing it in for Luka Vuskovic.
“Everything I’m hearing is that the players are really impressed with him, which is always a good indication. So, I think Kudus will be a regular starter for Tottenham next season in both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.”
Kudus has made an immediate impact at Tottenham, starting from his “You’ll find Spurs there!” reply to a doctor when he was going to listen to his heart during his medical.
The Ghanaian has everything in his locker to become a firm fan favourite at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and due to his ability to drive the ball with speed shrugging off players, he has rightly drawn comparisons with Dembele from Wenham.
Tottenham fans will be excited to watch Kudus in action either against Wycombe Wanderers or Luton Town on Saturday, as Frank’s team continue their preparations for the new season.
