Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma tipped to sign a pre-contract agreement in January

Tottenham Hotspur have burnt a lot of cash over poor signings for several years. Barring the last four to five years, their recruitment has been shoddy with plenty of new players failing to live up to the lofty expectations at White Hart Lane.

It is fair to count Tanguy Ndombele as one of the worst buys in the club’s history. Having arrived for £62.8m, including add-ons, a club record in 2019, Ndombele was expected to solve Tottenham’s midfield problems. However, a combination of injuries, chronic inconsistency and indiscipline led to the Frenchman mightily flopping at the club. Another player from recent memory who joined Spurs amidst huge excitement but could not cut the mustard in the Premier League is Bryan Gil. The Spanish winger was sold to Girona for just €10m on the summer transfer window’s deadline day.

Yves Bissouma also came close to leaving Tottenham in the summer. The midfielder was subject of interest from various European leagues as well as the Saudi Pro League. Fenerbahce seemed to be the most interested party in securing the Mali international’s signature, only for a knee injury to see a potential deal collapse.

Yves Bissouma expected to sign pre-contract agreement in January

The 29-year-old is into the final 10 months of his contract at Tottenham and has not played a single minute of competitive football under Thomas Frank. He was omitted from the squad to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup for disciplinary reasons.

Bissouma had been recovering from a knee injury and finally returned to the pitch for Mali over the previous international break, unfortunately, he was injured again moments after his introduction and stretchered off the pitch. Frank has said that the ankle ligament damage will sideline the midfielder for weeks. Last week, he underwent surgery and could be out for longer than first expected.

Thus, with his contract expiring in June 2026, reputable podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham believes that Bissouma will leave Tottenham after signing a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January.

“For me, it doesn’t change much. He hasn’t made a matchday squad this season. He was all set to move to Galatasaray, and then the first signs of that injury led to that move falling through,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.

“In January he’ll be able to agree a pre-contract to go for free to a non-UK club in the summer, and I suspect that’s what will happen. I don’t see a future for him at Tottenham, he’s been an incredibly frustrating signing overall.

“I’ve watched him many times completely dominate us in a Brighton shirt, and I’ve never seen that player for us. There were a handful of times under Postecoglou where it looked like we were getting some sort of return on him, but on the whole, it’s been incredibly disappointing signing.

“Multiple managers have had issues with his timekeeping and being let down by him. It’s time to part ways. I was disappointed that the move to Galatasaray fell through because I knew he wasn’t going to get any game time, but it is what it is.”

Bissouma has been a failure at Spurs

Bissouma only showed flashes of brilliance at Tottenham since arriving from Brighton in 2022. He was at his best in Spurs’ Europa League final win over Manchester United in May. That was the Malian international the fans had been craving for years, but it is a type of him that only popped up occasionally in a month.

On the whole, the combative midfielder will go down in the club’s long list of poor signings. The player has been largely disappointing for a combination of factors, and after falling out of favour under Frank and now injured again, Bissouma’s days at Spurs are numbered.
