Chiesa’s struggles at Liverpool could prompt Summer exit decision

Many questioned Arne Slot and the squad he inherited from Jurgen Klopp with only one major signing for the Liverpool season: Federico Chiesa ahead of the start of the season. The Italian had plenty of hype and good injury but harshly limited work with the squad. Regardless, Liverpool totally exceeded expectations and ultimately won the Premier League. Now, a surprise transfer deal is reportedly forged by Tottenham Hotspur for Chiesa that may very much change summer plans for both clubs.

Chiesa joined Liverpool from Juventus last summer amid high expectations but has struggled for game time. A combination of injuries and fierce competition has restricted the 27-year-old to only five Premier League appearances in his first season.

According to reports from Caught Offside, Liverpool are now willing to sell Chiesa permanently. With his limited impact and substantial wages, a transfer could suit both parties, especially as Arne Slot aims to streamline his squad.

Tottenham arrive as the potential suitors for the Italian

Since making his move from Juventus last year, Chiesa has featured in just 13 games and contributed to four goals. Struggling for minutes and unable to break into the starting line-up, the winger is now reportedly considering a permanent exit.

With Liverpool recently crowned Premier League champions under Arne Slot, the club has already begun preparations for next season. While new signings are expected, the priority remains keeping the squad tight and efficient—mirroring this season’s title-winning setup.

Several Italian clubs have shown interest in Chiesa, however, with Tottenham’s involvement in the race it now seems to be gathering steam. CaughtOffside reported that Tottenham has a slight upper hand in the signature of the Italian due to the relationship with Fabio Paratici, who is likely to resume a formal role with the club, Spurs are seriously looking into signing Chiesa.

Of course some Serie A sides show interest in Chiesa, AC Milan and Napoli to name two, however the main hurdle for Chiesa returning to Italy would likely be his salary. CaughtOffside wrote:

“The big stumbling block to a would-be return to Italy is surely the salary of Chiesa. Even Napoli, who are cashed up on the back of winning the Scudetto, will not be able to bring his wages much closer to club limits.”

In contrast, it is expected Tottenham would be more than able to afford the deal.

If Tottenham do secure his signature and Chiesa rediscovers his best form, it’s a move that could eventually sting. However, with Arne Slot’s current setup delivering results and flourishing in a trophy-rich new era, few supporters will question decisions made to preserve that momentum. While the idea of Chiesa leaving just a year after arriving may seem disappointing at first glance, it ultimately appears to be a step aligned with Liverpool’s broader vision.
