Mathys Tel has not had an easy start to life at Tottenham Hotspur after arriving at the club with a big reputation from Bayern Munich.
Regardless of him blowing more cold than hot during his initial loan spell, Spurs decided to sign the youngster permanently from Bayern Munich with an eye for the future. Rated as one of the promising attacking talents in world football, Mathys Tel, who was wanted by several clubs during the 2025 January transfer window, though, has not managed to live up to the lofty expectations at White Hart Lane thus far.
The France Under-21 international was surprisingly left out of the UEFA Champions League squad for the group phase, raising eyebrows among the Spurs fanbase. It is also fair to say that Tel is struggling to secure a regular starting spot in Thomas Frank’s side this season.
One of the major issues for Tel at Tottenham has been his inability to build on positive performances. This was evident when he failed to replicate his display against Leeds United after the October international break. This has seen him being written off by some sections of the fanbase and pundits alike.
Nonetheless, that hasn’t stopped the youngster from attracting interest from European clubs. As per recent reports, AS Roma have shown an interest in signing Tel. The Frenchman is open to leaving the club either permanently or on loan, as he seeks regular playing time. Game time have been limited for him at Tottenham this season, particularly after his Champions League omission.
Now, according to Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Football Italia), Spurs are not considering a full sale of Tel but are open to sanctioning a temporary exit. The north London side view the Sarcelles-born talent as a long-term investment, yet they recognise that his development would benefit from consistent minutes elsewhere.
AS Roma have identified Tel as one of the forward options to bolster their attacking force. While they are enjoying a strong season and lie second in Serie A, the Romans are among the top six sides to score the fewest goals. Gian Piero Gasperini wants to address this glaring issue by bringing in Tel.
Roma are among the most famous clubs in Europe, and the opportunity to represent them will be appealing to Tel, who is understood to be unhappy with his situation at Tottenham. The ex-Bayern Munich man is a prodigious talent with a lot of room for development, and joining a team that enables him to get regular minutes is exactly what he requires.
Battling an injury crisis, Tottenham are surprisingly ready to loan out Tel in winter. Perhaps, the 20-year-old’s departure will be dependant on a potential arrival, with the Hotspur Way chiefs scouring the market for a wide attacker and a striker. If Frank succeeds in getting his targets, loaning Tel out to Roma for the second half of the season would not be a bad idea.
